Apidya’ Special Set for August 25 Launch on PC, PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch

Date:

Apidya’ Special, a modern remake of the cult-classic Amiga shoot-’em-up, is scheduled for digital release on August 25, 2026. Publisher ININ Games and developer Team Apidya are bringing the title to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, introducing updated visuals, cooperative play and accessibility features while retaining the structure and challenge of the 1992 original.

Classic Amiga Shooter Returns for Modern Platforms

Originally released in 1992, Apidya developed a dedicated following among Amiga players for its unusual insect-themed fantasy setting, demanding side-scrolling action and distinctive soundtrack.

More than three decades later, Apidya’ Special rebuilds the game from scratch rather than relying on emulation. The remake is designed to preserve the gameplay identity of the original while making the experience more accessible on current hardware.

For U.S. players unfamiliar with the Amiga era, the original arrived during a period when home computers played a major role in European gaming. Its reputation endured among retro gaming enthusiasts, particularly fans of challenging horizontal shooters.

Two Visual Modes Blend Retro and Modern Presentation

One of the remake’s central features is the ability to switch between two visual presentations. Players can choose an updated HD widescreen format or a 4:3 presentation designed to resemble the original home-computer experience.

Additional optional visual effects include CRT shaders, bloom and scanline simulation for players who want a presentation closer to gaming displays of the early 1990s.

The remake also incorporates enhanced graphics originally created for an unreleased console version of Apidya. According to the developers, those assets are being made publicly available through the game for the first time.

Co-Op Mode Introduces a Second Playable Character

Apidya’ Special expands the original formula with a new cooperative mode. A second player can take control of a fully featured bee equipped with its own weapons, allowing two players to tackle the campaign together.

Accessibility has also been expanded through modernized difficulty settings. The options are intended to accommodate newcomers while preserving the demanding experience expected by longtime players.

Five Worlds and 20 Bosses Included

The game features five themed worlds: Meadow, Pond, Sewers, Cyber and Lair. Individual worlds can contain as many as five levels, with the full game offering 20 unique bosses and hidden special stages.

Randomized events are intended to add variation between playthroughs. One example is “Night Mode,” which can alter the environment and introduce different enemy sprites.

The developers have retained the game’s focus on fast-moving shoot-’em-up combat while adding features intended to provide additional replay value.

Chris Hülsbeck Soundtrack Returns

Music remains another major connection between Apidya’ Special and the original release.

The new version includes music from composer Chris Hülsbeck, whose work became closely associated with the original game’s identity. The soundtrack collection includes original and newly recorded studio versions, along with recordings originating from the Amiga version.

The combination is intended to preserve the recognizable sound of the original while presenting the music with modern production.

Nintendo Switch and Xbox Pre-Orders Open

Pre-orders are available for Nintendo Switch in Europe and Xbox ahead of the August 25 release. PC players can add the title to their Steam wishlists before launch.

A new trailer has also been released as part of the final countdown, highlighting the two visual modes, cooperative gameplay and other features introduced in the remake.

The game will launch digitally across all four announced platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

Team Apidya Heading to Gamescom 2026

Team Apidya is also scheduled to appear at Gamescom 2026, which takes place August 26 through August 30 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.

The developers will be located in the event’s retro area in Hall 10.2, Booth 6-8. Their appearance begins one day after the game’s scheduled digital release, giving attendees an opportunity to meet members of the development team.

A 1992 Cult Favorite Gets a Modern Revival

The release of Apidya’ Special continues the broader gaming industry’s renewed interest in bringing older titles to current hardware without relying solely on direct ports or emulation.

By combining rebuilt graphics and gameplay with widescreen support, cooperative play, adjustable difficulty and retro presentation options, Team Apidya is seeking to serve both longtime fans and players discovering the series for the first time.

Apidya’ Special is scheduled to launch digitally on August 25, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, marking the return of the cult shooter more than three decades after its original Amiga debut.
