Over The Top: WWI is expanding its large-scale World War I battles with the arrival of American forces, giving players a fourth playable nation alongside Germany, France and Great Britain. The update from Flying Squirrel Entertainment also introduces new weapons, vehicles and gameplay options, while a limited Steam free-play weekend gives newcomers an opportunity to enter the battlefield at no cost.
American Forces Join Over The Top: WWI
Flying Squirrel Entertainment released the major content update on August 20, bringing a fully developed U.S. faction to Over The Top: WWI. The American forces feature historically inspired U.S. Army uniforms, weapons and vehicles designed to distinguish the faction across the game’s different combat classes.
The addition reflects the role of American forces in the later stages of World War I, when U.S. troops—widely known as “Doughboys”—joined Allied operations on the Western Front.
Alongside the new faction, the update introduces a traditional first-person perspective. The option had been frequently requested by the game’s community and provides an alternative to the existing approach to battlefield combat.
Free-Play Weekend and Limited-Time Discount
The update is being accompanied by a Steam Free-Play Weekend. According to the developer, players can access the full game free of charge from 10 a.m. Pacific Time through 10 a.m. Monday.
The promotion allows players to experience the game’s large-scale battles, destructible environments, vehicles and infantry combat before deciding whether to purchase it.
Over The Top: WWI is also being offered at a 40% discount through August 27. The promotional U.S. price is $11.48.
Harlem Hellfighters DLC Adds Historical Cosmetics
Flying Squirrel Entertainment is also launching the paid Over The Top: WWI – Harlem Hellfighters DLC, centered on one of the most recognized American units to serve during World War I.
The Harlem Hellfighters, commonly associated with the U.S. Army’s 369th Infantry Regiment, spent extensive time in frontline combat under French command. The regiment earned recognition for its service, with members receiving France’s Croix de Guerre.
The cosmetic DLC includes dedicated Harlem Hellfighters outfits covering all eight playable classes, along with four headgear options for each class.
The DLC is priced at $3.99 on Steam. Unlike the broader content update, which is being provided free to players, the Harlem Hellfighters package is an optional paid cosmetic expansion.
Large-Scale Battles Support Up to 200 Combatants
Over The Top: WWI is built around large battlefield engagements involving as many as 200 players or AI-controlled bots. Matches can feature up to 100 combatants on each side, combining infantry warfare with armored vehicles, aircraft and artillery.
Destructible Battlefields Change During Combat
Environmental destruction is a central part of the gameplay. Players can dig trenches while artillery and other explosions create craters and reshape sections of the battlefield.
Dynamic weather, wind, seasons and time-of-day systems can further alter battlefield conditions as matches progress.
Players can choose among eight military roles, including officers, snipers, engineers and other specialized classes. The game features more than 50 weapons as well as 10 types of armored vehicles and tanks. Aircraft, machine guns, mortars and cannons are also available.
Map Editor and Community Servers Expand Gameplay
Beyond its 14 handcrafted battlefields, Over The Top: WWI includes a map editor that allows players to design their own environments and distribute them through Steam Workshop.
Server administration tools provide additional customization. Players can host their own servers and configure maps, gameplay rules and other settings, giving communities greater control over how battles are organized.
Flying Squirrel Entertainment Continues Focus on Historical Warfare
Flying Squirrel Entertainment is a four-person European development team with a background in historical military games. The studio traces its origins to developers behind the Mount & Musket mod for Mount & Blade: Warband, who later worked on the official Napoleonic Wars expansion.
Members of the team have also contributed to historical projects including Holdfast: Nations at War and Battle Cry of Freedom.
With the addition of the United States, Over The Top: WWI now offers four playable national factions while expanding its selection of historically inspired equipment and combat options. The free update, first-person mode and Steam Free-Play Weekend represent the game’s most substantial expansion since launch and provide both existing players and newcomers with additional ways to experience its 100-vs.-100 World War I battles.
