If you’re looking for a 5K display with a built-in webcam and speakers, you can also choose Apple’s new Studio Display. According to a company spokesperson, the monitor can also work on Windows systems, but there are restrictions that do not exist on macOS.
the Apple Specifications According to Studio Display, the new Mac Studio can be used with MacBook Pro from 2016, MacBook Air from 2018 model year, Mac mini from 2018, Mac Pro from 2019, and all iMac and iMac Pro models from 2017 work . In addition to macOS, the monitor is compatible with the iPad Pro 11″ and 12.9″ (3rd generation) and the recently introduced iPad Air 5th generation. The previous 4th generation iPad Air (test) cannot be used on the studio display because its USB-C connection only works at 5 Gbit/s.
Apple doesn’t include Windows operating systems, which is understandable for at least two reasons. On the one hand, Apple is not interested in promoting Windows, on the other hand, there is no full compatibility with Windows, although the monitor can certainly be used on the PC, unlike a speaker. the edge Has confirmed.
The center stage and audio features are gone
Windows users don’t have to do without the integrated webcam and six speakers. However, the fine print on Apple’s website says: “Studio Display camera features and firmware updates require connection to a Mac.According to the spokesperson, the center stage feature, which keeps the user in the center even when moving in front of the camera, no longer works on Windows. Features like spatial audio or “Hey Siri”, which are also handled via the integrated A13 Bionic, also don’t work on Windows. However, for the Windows operating system, the camera behaves like a USB-connected webcam.
No firmware updates on Windows
If Apple ever offers new features for the Studio Display or fixes bugs, a Mac must be connected for the firmware update.
In principle, however, interested Windows users can also connect the Studio Display to their PC, as long as it can output a signal in 5K resolution at 60 Hz via Thunderbolt or USB-C. Apart from the old LG UltraFine 5K 27MD5KL-B, which LG practically developed for Apple, Apple stands alone with the resolution and features of the Studio Display. However, if you go to 4K resolution, there is a wide range of high-performance monitors for at least 1,749 euros that Apple asks, which also dominate 120 Hz and more as well as HDR.
