Players can now try the first public demo of Ardent Wilds, an upcoming open-world survival crafting RPG from Belgian indie developer Spellware Studios. The new demo offers an early look at the game’s unique progression system, fast-paced combat, cooperative multiplayer, and fully destructible voxel world as it prepares for a broader release on Steam.
A New Survival RPG Introduces an In-World Progression System
Spellware Studios, an independent game developer based in Ghent, Belgium, has released the first playable demo of Ardent Wilds on Steam. The title combines open-world exploration, survival crafting, role-playing mechanics, and action-focused combat into a single experience centered on player freedom.
Rather than using a traditional menu-based skill tree, Ardent Wilds integrates progression directly into the game world. Players unlock skill nodes by discovering and restoring ancient magical structures scattered throughout the map, rewarding exploration while expanding character abilities.
The game’s story revolves around rebuilding four ancient magical spires that defend the realm from the Eldran, an expanding eldritch hivemind threatening to consume the world.
Players Can Build Their Own Combat Style
Customize Abilities and Face Challenging Boss Battles
Combat plays a major role in the game, giving players access to a wide variety of spells, abilities, and artifacts that can be combined into customized builds.
Available powers range from offensive magic, such as fire-based attacks, to mobility skills that allow players to rapidly move across battlefields. As players progress, they encounter increasingly difficult enemies and large-scale boss fights designed to test both strategy and character progression.
According to Spellware Studios, the combat system emphasizes fast, arcade-style action while encouraging experimentation with different ability combinations.
Demo Highlights Exploration, Building, and Cooperative Play
Early playtesters have compared Ardent Wilds to a three-dimensional version of classic sandbox survival games because of its combination of crafting, exploration, and progression.
The newly released Steam demo provides access to several core gameplay systems, including:
- Fast-paced action combat
- A progression system built directly into the environment
- Fully destructible voxel terrain
- Survival and crafting mechanics
- Extensive base-building tools
Players can choose to focus on exploration and combat or spend time constructing detailed fantasy homes. The game also supports cooperative multiplayer for up to six players through Steam or a local area network (LAN), allowing groups to explore and survive together.
World Exploration Rewards Character Growth
Ancient Spires Double as Fast-Travel Locations
One of the game’s defining mechanics is its physical skill tree.
Instead of unlocking abilities from a menu, players restore ancient spires and forgotten facilities hidden throughout the world. Each restored location unlocks new passive bonuses while simultaneously serving as a fast-travel point, encouraging exploration across the procedurally generated landscape.
The voxel-based environment is fully destructible, giving players the freedom to reshape terrain, gather resources, and build structures almost anywhere.
Base Building and Modding Expand Long-Term Gameplay
In addition to combat and exploration, Ardent Wilds includes a deep crafting and building system. Players collect materials to create weapons, armor, furniture, and decorative items for personalized fantasy homes.
Spellware Studios also plans to support community-created content by including full modding support. Existing game scripts will be accessible through the game’s Lua API, allowing players to modify and expand gameplay systems.
Story Centers on Stopping an Ancient Threat
The game’s campaign follows players as they grow stronger to confront the Eldran, an otherworldly hivemind spreading across the realm.
By restoring magical infrastructure and unlocking increasingly powerful abilities, players eventually prepare to challenge the Eldran’s leader, Yorgoroth, the Devourer of Worlds, in what is expected to be one of the game’s most difficult encounters.
Steam Demo Available Now
The first public demo of Ardent Wilds is now available on Steam, giving players an opportunity to experience its exploration-focused progression system, cooperative gameplay, crafting mechanics, and action combat before the game’s full release.
The demo serves as an early preview of Spellware Studios’ vision for a survival RPG that blends sandbox creativity with fast-paced PvE combat, while introducing a progression system that is physically embedded within the game world.
