BREAKOUT BABY Demo Brings First-Person Horror Roguelike Chaos to Steam and itch.io

Date:

Assemble Entertainment and independent developer STH have released a playable demo for BREAKOUT BABY, an upcoming first-person horror roguelike that combines classic maze-chase mechanics with survival horror and dark comedy. The demo is now available on Steam and itch.io ahead of the game’s planned 2026 release.

Inspired by the basic structure of arcade maze games such as Pac-Man, BREAKOUT BABY places players inside dangerous first-person environments where collecting pellets becomes a high-risk task. Adding to the unusual premise, players must escort a baby through the maze while avoiding creatures and searching for a route to safety.

BREAKOUT BABY Turns Maze-Chase Gameplay Into Survival Horror

The basic objective in BREAKOUT BABY is deliberately straightforward: collect every pellet on a level and survive long enough to unlock the next floor.

Doing so becomes increasingly dangerous because the environments are populated by grotesque creatures capable of stalking, hunting and ambushing the player.

Collecting pellets also creates noise, potentially revealing the player’s position to nearby enemies. That turns a familiar arcade objective into a risk-versus-reward challenge in which progress can also increase the threat.

The player is simultaneously responsible for keeping the baby alive while navigating each hostile floor.

Players Must Collect Pellets While Avoiding Monsters

Every pellet on a floor must be collected before players can advance, forcing them to explore potentially dangerous areas rather than simply finding the shortest path to an exit.

The game also features gifts scattered throughout its levels. Finding these items can change how a particular run unfolds, introducing roguelike elements and encouraging players to adapt their strategy depending on what they discover.

This structure means repeated attempts may develop differently as players encounter new items and threats.

An Unusual Enemy-Detection Mechanic Adds to the Horror

One of BREAKOUT BABY’s more distinctive mechanics involves waking the baby to reveal the locations of nearby enemies.

Players can use this ability to gain information about threats in the surrounding area, potentially helping them decide whether to move forward, retreat or find another route.

However, navigating each floor remains a balancing act between gathering information, collecting required pellets and avoiding monsters.

The first-person perspective further changes the traditional maze-chase formula. Instead of seeing an entire maze from above, players experience the environment at ground level, limiting their ability to immediately identify threats and increasing the potential for surprise encounters.

Roguelike Systems Can Change Each Attempt

The game’s roguelike structure is intended to keep individual runs unpredictable.

Twisted gifts found during exploration can significantly affect a run, while enemy encounters and the pressure of completing each floor create additional uncertainty.

The result combines several genres, including arcade survival, first-person horror and roguelike progression, while using dark comedy to distinguish the game’s deliberately strange premise.

STH Draws Inspiration From Classic Arcade Games

According to the developers, BREAKOUT BABY takes recognizable elements from traditional maze-chase games and transforms them into a more frantic horror experience.

The familiar task of clearing collectibles from a maze remains central, but players must perform it while dealing with limited visibility, threatening creatures and potential jump scares.

Rather than recreating the presentation of classic arcade games, STH uses their fundamental gameplay structure as the basis for a first-person survival experience.

The developer describes the project as combining arcade maze-chase mechanics, dark comedy and high-stakes survival.

BREAKOUT BABY Is Scheduled for Release in 2026

BREAKOUT BABY is being developed by STH and published by Germany-based Assemble Entertainment. The publisher has previously worked on indie titles including Sticky Business, Roadwarden, Decktamer, Paddle Paddle Paddle, Grind Survivors and the Endzone franchise.

Since 2016, Assemble Entertainment has released more than 50 games spanning genres such as strategy, horror, cozy games and roguelikes.

The full version of BREAKOUT BABY is scheduled to arrive on Steam and itch.io in 2026. With the demo now available, players can get an early look at how the game transforms familiar maze-chase mechanics into a first-person horror roguelike built around exploration, unpredictable threats and an intentionally bizarre survival scenario.
