Crystals of Irm Targets Late 2026 Release With Retro RPG and Bullet-Hell Combat

Date:

Deck13 Spotlight and developer David Schütze have revealed a late-2026 release window for Crystals of Irm, a retro-inspired role-playing game that combines traditional dungeon crawling with fast, movement-based combat and bullet-hell mechanics. The game is planned for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.

A new release-window trailer offers another look at the world of Irm, where players will command a three-character party, explore cities and dangerous dungeons, complete quests and search for a collection of long-lost Crystals.

Crystals of Irm Blends Classic RPG Design With Modern Combat

At the center of Crystals of Irm is a party consisting of three heroes representing familiar RPG archetypes: a fighter, mage and ranger.

Each character represents a different guild and combat style, but all three share the same central objective. The party must recover the missing Crystals of Irm and reunite them.

According to the game’s story, the Crystals are hidden inside three dangerous dungeons. Previous adventurers have attempted the same mission without success, leaving players to prepare their party before entering the locations themselves.

Reaching those dungeons will require considerable exploration. The world includes cities, villages and towns populated by characters who can interact with the party and request assistance.

First-Person Exploration Brings Irm’s World to Life

While Crystals of Irm draws heavily from classic role-playing games, its exploration is presented through a first-person 3D perspective.

Players can travel across a large overworld before entering dungeon environments, creating a structure reminiscent of older RPG adventures while using a more modern presentation.

The game also incorporates quieter activities between battles. Players can establish camps, gather their party around a meal and fish in ponds found throughout Irm.

Cities are designed with their own characters and identities, giving players additional reasons to explore beyond the central quest.

Grid-Based Battles Add Bullet-Hell Mechanics

Combat is one of the game’s biggest departures from conventional retro RPG systems.

Crystals of Irm uses movement-based grid battles in which positioning plays an important role in both offense and defense. Players must move strategically to cast spells and execute powerful attacks.

Enemy encounters also introduce elements commonly associated with bullet-hell games. Opponents can unleash attack sequences that players must actively dodge, putting greater emphasis on timing and movement than traditional menu-driven RPG battles.

The developers describe the system as challenging without being unfair, with player movement and decision-making determining success during encounters.

Combat Mixes Strategy, Movement and Fast Reactions

The combination creates a hybrid between deliberate role-playing strategy and faster action mechanics.

Instead of remaining stationary while selecting commands, players must pay attention to enemy attack patterns and reposition themselves accordingly. The system is designed to retain recognizable RPG roles such as fighters, mages and rangers while changing how their abilities are used in battle.

This approach gives Crystals of Irm a connection to classic games while introducing a more active style of combat.

Retro RPG Influences Include Ultima

Deck13 Spotlight and Schütze have positioned Crystals of Irm as a game aimed at players familiar with older role-playing titles, with Ultima cited as one of its nostalgic reference points.

Its expansive overworld, first-person dungeon crawling and party-based adventure reflect those influences. At the same time, the 3D environments, movement-focused battles and bullet-hell elements are intended to distinguish it from straightforward recreations of classic RPG design.

A playable demo is also scheduled to be presented at the Indie Arena Booth in Cologne in August, giving attendees an opportunity to experience the game before its full release.

Crystals of Irm Coming to PC and Consoles in Late 2026

Crystals of Irm is scheduled to arrive later in 2026, although an exact release date has not yet been announced.

The game is planned for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. PC players will be able to access it through Steam and GOG.

By combining first-person exploration, party-based RPG progression and movement-heavy bullet-hell battles, Crystals of Irm is aiming to bridge two generations of role-playing design. Its late-2026 launch will test whether that combination can appeal both to longtime retro RPG players and audiences looking for a more active approach to dungeon combat.
