Intel is retiring the Pentium and Celeron processor families, which are at the lower end of its internal portfolio, and focusing even more on the higher-ranking premium brands Core, Evo, and vPro. Starting in 2023, the manufacturer will gradually drop the “Intel processor” below the Core i series.

The “Intel Processor” replaces Pentium and Celeron

For “essential” application areas, Intel has planned the “Intel processor” – “Intel Processor” – starting in 2023, starting with the mobile portfolio for notebooks and 2-in-1s, which is intended to replace the Pentium and Celeron brands and below. Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 are placed. “Mobile Client Platforms”, which will be standardized with this measure, will no longer be considered with Pentium and Celeron CPUs from the following product year to 2023.

Today, Intel introduces a new processor for the core product space: the Intel Processor. The new offering will replace the Intel Pentium and Intel Celeron brand in the 2023 notebook product stack.

Processors and systems on a chip (SoC) from different product families, previously classified as Pentium or Celeron, will be combined and offered under the “Intel Processor” brand.

As Intel has announced, processors that have already been released and CPUs that are already on public roadmaps are not affected by this move.

The manufacturer has not yet responded if and when Pentium and Celeron processors in the desktop will follow suit with the mobile branches. However, it can be assumed that the entire product portfolio will be based on the new processor nomenclature in the medium term.

Much remains unclear

Intel has not revealed exactly what the names of the different models will look like. The manufacturer only revealed the reason for this action, in order to be able to find the right CPU for the desired use case more easily.
