Just a few days ago, or rather on March 15, 2022, Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online for the new generation consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. GTA Online can also be downloaded for free as a standalone title on PlayStation 5 until June 14. With the next-gen version there are better graphics, more frames, faster loading times, and much more. Exactly two weeks later, on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, a new paid subscription service called “GTA+” will launch.

Rockstar ensures that the benefits will appear in addition to all the normal events of GTA Online.

Fans think Abo is a premature April Fool’s joke

In the GTA community, however, the new subscription service is not well received. Players express their anger through social media posts and comments on relevant forums. They see the growing monetization of the GTA franchise as a harsh slap in the face to the loyal fans who have already been able to buy GTA 5 on various platforms and have also put a lot of money into GTA Online.

A few years ago, in 2018 to be exact, GTA 5 was recognized as the most profitable entertainment product of all time. Four years ago, with more than six billion US dollars, revenues were already well above the values that blockbuster movies like Star Wars or Avatar could reach (more about this).

So fans can be understood that starting today, almost four years after receiving this award, they will be asked to pay again for additional in-game benefits. Even before the announcement of this subscription model for GTA Online, the game mode was considered a money printing machine. Some parts of the community even believe that the monetary success of GTA 5, or GTA Online, is the reason follow-up projects in the legendary franchise are taking so long. After all, Rockstar Games first officially spoke in February about the successor, which is expected to be called GTA 6.

In addition, the benefits you get from the GTA Online subscription are not proportional to the 5.99 euros that you are supposed to pay monthly for it. It is considered that GTA$500,000, for example, can be easily earned in a day or two.

What do you think of the new subscription service in GTA Online? Are you still playing or are you eagerly awaiting GTA 6? If you are interested, you can learn more about the successor here:
