In 2019, the short movie Hair Love received Best Animated Shorter Film at the Oscars. The short, which was directed by Matthew A. Cherry, Everett Downing Jr., and Bruce W. Smith, centered on a Black 7-12 months-old trying to style her hair with the enable of her father and an instructional video clip from her mother.
Now, the short is established to grow to be a whole collection at HBO Max. A 12-episode, 2D-animated series has been greenlit, with Cherry and Carl Jones (The Boondocks, Black Dynamite) at the helm. The new series is named Youthful Like, and will concentrate on the same relatives introduced in Hair Love — dad and mom Stephen and Angela, and their daughter Zuri, alongside with their pet cat Rocky. It will tackle not only hair, but juggling developing a career with using care of a relatives, and widespread social concerns.
