Hardlane Studio has released a playable Steam demo for Outcast Tales, giving PC players an early look at its character-driven blend of tactical combat, party building and post-apocalyptic storytelling. The role-playing game is being developed by the Lisbon-based studio and published by Inner Pocket.
The demo introduces players to a harsh wasteland where survival depends not only on combat skills, but also on the personalities and relationships of the characters travelling together.
Players Build a Party From an Unusual Cast of Outcasts
At the centre of Outcast Tales is a three-character party selected from a larger roster of distinctive heroes. Players guide their chosen group across a dangerous post-apocalyptic landscape in search of glory, riches and memorable adventures.
Characters can be paired with different personalities that influence their abilities and their relationships with other members of the group. The system allows for deliberately unusual combinations, including an intellectual savage or a pacifist bounty hunter accompanied by a decidedly less peaceful lizard companion.
Changing heroes and personality traits between runs can alter both gameplay and narrative events, encouraging players to experiment with different party configurations.
Turn-Based Combat Rewards Team Synergy
Personality alone will not keep the group alive. The wasteland is populated by hostile robots, raiders and mutants, with conflicts unfolding through tactical, turn-based battles.
Players can upgrade attacks and abilities while experimenting with different squad compositions. Finding effective combinations between party members is designed to create stronger tactical synergies, particularly when facing more difficult opponents.
Combat therefore works alongside the game’s character-building systems rather than functioning as a separate element. The abilities and personalities selected for the party can influence how players approach challenges throughout their journey.
Random Events and Moral Choices Shape Each Journey
Exploration also introduces unpredictable events and encounters. Players can face moral dilemmas in which their decisions affect both the immediate situation and relationships within the party.
A character’s particular strengths may provide an unexpected way to resolve a conflict, while the same qualities can also create disagreements with companions.
Those decisions can strengthen or damage relationships over time, potentially resulting in friendships, romances or rivalries. These connections can subsequently influence character outlooks and gameplay.
The combination of randomized encounters, personality choices and changing relationships is intended to make individual playthroughs unfold differently.
Outcast Tales Combines Tactical RPG Systems With Narrative Choices
Among the game’s central features is the ability to create a customized band of adventurers by combining different heroes and personalities. New combinations can change combat strategies while unlocking additional story events.
Turn-based tactical battles emphasize cooperation between squad members, while encounters outside combat require players to make choices capable of altering the direction of the story.
Relationships are another major part of the experience. Decisions can bring characters closer together or create lasting conflicts, adding consequences beyond whether players simply win or lose a battle.
Full Outcast Tales Release Planned for Later This Year
Outcast Tales is scheduled to launch on Steam later this year as a completely free game. The newly released demo gives players an opportunity to experience its party-building, tactical combat and narrative systems ahead of the full release.
Hardlane Studio is a three-person development team focused on combining narrative design with gameplay systems. The studio previously created the Flash title Wondrous Lands, which gained an audience on Newgrounds and helped inspire the team’s continued work in game development.
With Outcast Tales, the studio is expanding that approach into a larger tactical RPG built around unpredictable adventures, unconventional characters and player-driven relationships.
