‘Uta Macross’ Revival Project Brings Rhythm Game Back to Steam, iOS and Android in 2027

Date:

Uta Macross is making a comeback. AUGUST Inc. has announced a revival of the rhythm game based on the long-running Macross anime franchise, with a rebuilt premium edition planned for Steam, iOS and Android in spring 2027.

The project revives Uta Macross: Smartphone De Culture, the mobile rhythm game that ended service in 2022. A crowdfunding campaign is scheduled to begin September 10, 2026, with funding intended to support additional platforms, songs and other content.

Uta Macross Returns as an Offline Premium Rhythm Game

The revived Uta Macross will bring together singers, pilots and music from multiple eras of the franchise, including The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Macross Plus, Macross 7, Macross Frontier and Macross Delta, along with characters and material from their television series and theatrical films.

While the new version retains popular elements from the former live-service game, including performances and artwork, its underlying systems are being rebuilt for a premium release.

The original game was designed primarily around smartphone touch controls. The revival is being optimized to support keyboard-and-mouse controls on PC while remaining available on mobile devices.

Developers say the goal is to make the new version accessible both to returning players and people experiencing Uta Macross for the first time.

Standard Edition to Feature About 50 Songs

The Standard Edition is expected to launch with approximately 50 selected songs from the Macross franchise.

Players will also receive access to more than 1,000 Plates rated four stars or higher, along with more than 20 outfits for each singer from the start of the game.

One significant change involves the former gacha system used to increase Plate rarity. In the revived version, those pulls will be completely free and unlimited, removing the paid mechanics typically associated with live-service mobile games.

The change will also give players another opportunity to unlock performances that may have been difficult to access in the original release because of rare Plate or costume requirements.

Multiple downloadable content packs are planned alongside the Standard Edition. The DLC is expected to restore remaining songs from the previous live-service version while adding selected Plates and outfits.

Crowdfunding Campaign Begins September 10

The development team said continued requests from fans following the original game’s shutdown helped drive the revival project.

Members of the previous development team have reunited for the new version, which will be supported by a crowdfunding campaign through CAMPFIRE.

The campaign is scheduled to run from September 10 at 7 a.m. EDT through October 31 at 10:59 a.m. EDT. Support levels and feedback could influence plans for additional platforms and new songs delivered through future DLC.

Crowdfunding-exclusive rewards are also planned.

Original Development Partners Return

AUGUST Inc. is producing the revival, with xeen returning as developer. BIGWEST, the Macross copyright holder, is cooperating with the project, while DeNA, which operated and supported the previous game, is also involved.

Revival Project producer and AUGUST representative director Kei Hirono credited continued fan interest with helping make the project possible.

“Hello everyone. My name is Kei Hirono, and I will be serving as the producer of the Uta Macross Revival Project.

With the warm cooperation and trust of BIGWEST, the copyright holder; xeen, who will once again be responsible for development, as they were for the previous version; and DeNA, who carefully operated and supported the previous version for many years, I am honored to be involved as the producer as this project gets underway.

The driving force behind the launch of this project has been the passionate support from fans who have continued to call for the return of Uta Macross. We are determined to answer that passion in every way we can. Our goal is to create a world where as many players as possible can enjoy the game across a wide range of platforms and environments.

There are still challenges that we must overcome, but the continued support of our fans will be our greatest driving force.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could show your support for this new beginning by adding the project to your Favorites on CAMPFIRE and adding Uta Macross to your Steam Wishlist.”

Macross Franchise Approaches 45th Anniversary

The revival arrives as Macross approaches its 45th anniversary in 2027. The franchise began with the 1982 television anime The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and became known for combining transforming Valkyrie fighter aircraft, music and character relationships.

Songs have remained a central element throughout the franchise, making the rhythm-game format a natural extension of its decades-long catalog.

AUGUST has not yet announced pricing for the revived game. Uta Macross is currently scheduled for a spring 2027 release on Steam, iOS and Android, bringing its catalog of songs, characters and performances back in a format designed to remain playable without its former live-service structure.
