Alice Recoque, pioneer in computer science and artificial intelligence, dies

Alice Recoque had led the development of the Mitra 15 minicomputer, marketed in the 1970s.

French engineer Alice Recoque, a computer pioneer, died Thursday at the age of 91, her family announced.

A graduate of the Higher School of Physics and Industrial Chemistry (ESPCI), she led the development of the Mitra 15 minicomputer, designed as part of the Calculus plan desired by General de Gaulle. Marketed since 1971, the Mitra 15 controlled robots or security systems in nuclear power plants, piloted missiles or ships, and calculated scientific experiments. More than 8,000 units have been sold.

Alice Recoque was also one of the first French scientists to be interested in artificial intelligence. In 1985, she was appointed to lead the AI ​​mission at Bull. The engineer also participated in the founding meeting of the CNIL in 1978.

Le Figaro had dedicated a long portrait of Alice Recoque in 2018, as part of a summer series on women making computer science history.
