Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute Hippo Released for Desktops, Servers, and Raspberry Pi

Canonical has released the next version of the Linux Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute Hippo operating system. This release contains a number of changes and innovations that point to where Ubuntu will take next.

The biggest change in Ubuntu 21.04 is the change from the Xorg image server to Wayland, a welcome move given the Xorg era. Ubuntu 21.04 now uses Wayland by default, which is an important step forward in security. Firefox, OBS Studio and many other applications built with Electron and Flutter automatically take advantage of Wayland for smoother graphics and better scaling, Canonical said in an announcement.

In Ubuntu 21.04, the home directory is completely private. In previous versions, users could read each other’s home directories, including important files and personal settings. In the new version of the operating system, this function is blocked. Ubuntu 21.04 also features a new dark Yaru theme that includes new icons. The new version of the operating system also offers the latest version of Gnome Shell 3.38.5.

The Ubuntu installer has been updated to include Active Directory for sysadmins to manage and configure systems. For those who encrypt their drives, Ubuntu 21.04 will provide a recovery key. The kernel has been updated to Linux Kernel 5.11.

In addition to desktops and servers, the new Ubuntu 21.04 is also available for Raspberry Pi 4 microcomputers and works with Raspberry Pi 2-400 models. You can download Ubuntu 21.04 at the official website of the project.
