Ever since Google Stadia saw the light of day in 2019, the service has been powered by custom AMD GPUs. The servers are said to be equipped with AMD Radeon Pro V340 chips or similar graphics cards. The information comes from the modified version of the Linux kernel used by Google Stadia or Immersive Stream. Of course, this is open source software, so the changes are publicly visible. Last month, Google added a way to provide the code with its own Kokoro builder with drivers for Nvidia GPUs. The drivers themselves have not yet been released. It’s unclear if Google is preparing a hardware update for Stadia.
It’s also unclear which Nvidia graphics cards might be used in connection with the game streaming service. Google has yet to make an official statement on the matter. There have been signs for a long time that Stadia has failed and that Google is considering ending the platform. This means that only the technology behind the service must remain in the future. Internally, the priority for Stadia is said to have already been lowered. As part of Google I/O, it was announced that Google has removed the games tab from the store and hidden Stadia in the smart home area.
