Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Reveals Gameplay Trailer and Opens Preorders Ahead of 2027 Launch

Date:

Reimagined Version of the Original Tomb Raider Arrives Feb. 12 on Consoles, PC and Nintendo Switch 2

Amazon Game Studios, Crystal Dynamics, and Flying Wild Hog have officially opened preorders for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a modern reimagining of the original 1996 Tomb Raider game.

The announcement was accompanied by a new gameplay trailer revealed during Sony’s State of Play presentation, offering fans their first detailed look at the updated adventure starring Lara Croft.

The game is scheduled to launch Feb. 12, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Classic Tomb Raider Adventure Rebuilt for Modern Platforms

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis revisits the storyline of the original Tomb Raider, following Lara Croft on a globe-spanning expedition to uncover the mysteries of Atlantis.

According to the developers, the remake combines updated visuals, modern gameplay systems, expanded storytelling, and redesigned environments while preserving the core spirit of the 1996 release that helped define the action-adventure genre.

The game includes reimagined puzzles, cinematic set pieces, traversal mechanics, and upgraded combat sequences, including a modernized version of the franchise’s famous T. rex encounter.

Expanded Story Connects to Lara Croft’s Future

Developers said the game’s narrative has been expanded with new story elements designed to create deeper links between Lara Croft’s earliest adventure and later entries in the franchise.

Players will explore multiple locations inspired by the original game, including:

  • The jungles of Peru
  • Ancient Greek ruins
  • Egyptian deserts
  • Myth-inspired lost islands

The game also introduces updated traversal mechanics using Lara’s agility, climbing abilities, and grappling hook systems.

Gameplay Modernization Balances Nostalgia and New Features

The remake aims to preserve the atmosphere and exploration-focused design of classic Tomb Raider games while incorporating modern action gameplay standards.

Lara Croft will once again use her signature dual pistols while also gaining access to additional unlockable weapons and expanded acrobatic combat abilities.

Puzzle Solving and Exploration Remain Central

In addition to combat, the game heavily emphasizes environmental puzzles and ancient mechanisms.

Players will manipulate hidden devices, unlock secret chambers, and solve interconnected challenges throughout the adventure using exploration and observation rather than purely action-focused gameplay.

The balance between platforming, puzzle-solving, and cinematic storytelling helped make the original Tomb Raider one of the defining games of the late 1990s.

Multiple Editions Available for Preorder

Preorders are currently available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.

The game will launch in three editions:

Standard Edition — $59.99

Nintendo Switch 2 Version Confirmed for Launch Day

The companies also confirmed that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will release on Nintendo Switch 2 the same day as other platforms.

Developers said the Switch 2 version has been optimized for both docked and handheld play while maintaining the game’s cinematic presentation and smooth performance.

The launch support reflects growing industry confidence in Nintendo’s next-generation hardware as publishers increasingly bring larger AAA titles to portable systems.

Tomb Raider Franchise Continues Expanding

The Tomb Raider franchise has sold roughly 100 million copies worldwide since debuting in 1996 and remains one of gaming’s most recognizable series.

The recent Survivor Trilogy — including Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider — helped introduce the franchise to a new generation of players through more cinematic storytelling and survival-focused gameplay.

With Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the developers are revisiting the origins of the franchise while modernizing one of gaming’s most influential adventures for current-generation audiences.
