Survival Town-Builder Gains Momentum With Strong Player Numbers and Global Streaming Success
Swedish indie developer Beartwigs and publisher Three Friends announced that Romestead has sold more than 250,000 copies during its first week in Steam Early Access.
The survival crafting and town-building game launched May 26, 2026, and quickly gained traction among players drawn to its blend of cooperative survival gameplay, Roman-inspired world-building, and retro pixel-art presentation.
The project also arrives amid continued demand for multiplayer survival games on PC, a genre that remains highly popular on Steam following the success of titles such as Valheim and Minecraft.
Strong Early Access Launch Drives Player Growth
According to the developers, Romestead reached several major milestones during its first week online.
The game recorded:
- More than 250,000 copies sold
- Over 37,000 peak concurrent players
- More than 478,000 Steam wishlists
- More than 593,000 hours streamed on Twitch
- Placement among Steam’s Top 50 most-played games by daily active users
The studio also said players have collectively spent more than 200 years rebuilding the game’s fictional Roman settlements since launch.
International Audience Fuels Growth
The game has attracted a broad global audience across multiple regions.
Developers reported that approximately 45% of sales came from China, while 26% originated from English-speaking markets including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The remaining sales were spread across Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
The strong Chinese market performance reflects the growing international demand for survival crafting games and cooperative sandbox experiences.
Survival Gameplay Reimagines Ancient Rome
Romestead combines survival mechanics with city-building and fantasy-inspired combat set during a fictionalized collapse of Ancient Rome.
Players rebuild settlements, gather resources, fight undead enemies, and hunt mythological creatures while uncovering mysteries tied to the fallen empire.
The game supports both solo play and cooperative multiplayer, allowing players to rebuild Roman communities together while defending against increasingly dangerous threats.
Its pixel-art presentation and mythological themes help distinguish it from more realistic survival simulators currently dominating the genre.
Developers Continue Frequent Updates and Bug Fixes
Beartwigs said the team has already released multiple patches since launch to address bugs, improve balance, and refine gameplay systems.
According to the studio, some updates were deployed multiple times per day during the first week of release.
The developers said they are currently focused on stabilizing the game and strengthening its core systems before unveiling a larger long-term content roadmap.
Fourth Major Biome Planned
Future updates are expected to include a fourth major biome introducing:
- New enemy types
- Additional dungeons
- Expanded building options
- New armor tiers
- Additional bosses
- New progression systems
The roadmap approach follows a model commonly used by successful survival games on Steam, where early access launches serve as evolving live-development platforms shaped by community feedback.
Veteran Developers Back the Project
Publisher Three Friends was founded by industry veterans connected to several major indie success stories.
The company includes developers and publishers associated with games such as Valheim, Minecraft, and Deep Rock Galactic.
The publisher focuses primarily on supporting Nordic indie studios through financing, development guidance, and publishing support.
Meanwhile, Beartwigs is based in Linköping, Sweden, and focuses on retro-inspired pixel-art game design.
Survival Crafting Games Continue Dominating Steam
The success of Romestead highlights the continued popularity of survival crafting games within the PC gaming market.
Titles that combine cooperative gameplay, base building, exploration, and progression systems remain among Steam’s strongest-performing genres, particularly when supported by active community engagement and early access development.
With strong initial sales, growing Twitch visibility, and an expanding player base, Romestead appears positioned to become one of the latest breakout indie survival games to emerge from the Nordic game development scene.
