Rogue Waves, a new surfing-themed roguelike deckbuilder from Uruguay-based indie studio Pomelo Games, has launched a playable demo on Steam. The game blends competitive surfing, card-based strategy and offbeat humor in a colorful world built around high-scoring tricks and risky wave selection.
The demo became available Aug. 20, 2026, alongside the game’s Steam page, giving players an early look at its deckbuilding systems, rival surfers and wave-drafting mechanics.
Rogue Waves Blends Competitive Surfing With Deckbuilding
Set around the fictional beaches of Porto Calambre, Rogue Waves puts players into four-round surf competitions where the highest score wins.
Before performing tricks, players compete for the best waves by spending limited energy to outbid a rival. Using too much energy during the bidding phase can leave fewer resources available for improving moves later in the round.
That system creates a constant tradeoff between securing a stronger wave and preserving enough energy to maximize a run.
The game places humor at the center of its presentation, combining exaggerated surf culture with intentionally impossible tricks, fictional brands and eccentric characters.
Card Combos Drive High Scores
Unlike many traditional deckbuilders, Rogue Waves does not use conventional card costs or a dedicated inventory system.
Instead, players build combinations of maneuver cards designed to create increasingly powerful scoring synergies. Successful decks can chain together absurd tricks and push scores beyond normal limits.
The game also avoids conventional combat. Competition comes from rivals, bidding decisions and passive-aggressive banter rather than direct attacks.
Steam Demo Includes More Than 50 Cards
The newly released demo includes a fully implemented Rookie deck containing more than 50 cards.
Players can also collect more than 40 stickers provided by fictional sponsors. These stickers can alter the rules or provide effects capable of reshaping a run.
Six rival surfers are included in the demo, each with unique abilities or effects that can interfere with the player’s strategy.
The demo also introduces the game’s rogue wave mechanic, which creates unusually large waves that offer major rewards but carry severe penalties if players fail to handle them successfully.
Wave Drafting Rewards Risk Management
The wave-drafting system is one of the game’s central strategic mechanics.
Players spend a limited energy resource to compete with rivals for access to stronger waves. Winning a desirable wave can create a better scoring opportunity, but excessive bidding can weaken the player’s ability to perform high-value tricks afterward.
That tension is designed to make each round feel different, particularly as rival abilities and run-altering stickers change the available options.
Between Competitions, Players Can Upgrade Their Runs
Outside tournaments, players can visit several locations to prepare for future competitions.
The shop offers new maneuver cards, while the spa can be used to recover from injuries. The gym provides temporary stat boosts, and sponsored events give players opportunities to earn stickers that can modify the rest of a run.
These systems form the roguelike progression structure, encouraging repeated playthroughs with different decks, upgrades and strategic choices.
Bright Art and Surf Humor Shape the Presentation
Rogue Waves uses stylized card illustrations, expressive characters and colorful environments to create a playful interpretation of international surf culture.
Its setting is framed as a globe-trotting fantasy of sunny beaches, eccentric locals and intentionally ridiculous sponsor brands.
The overall tone emphasizes summer atmosphere and comedy while retaining the strategic pressure associated with roguelike deckbuilders.
Pomelo Games Returns to PC After Outlanders
Pomelo Games is a small independent studio based in Uruguay.
The developer previously released Outlanders on Steam, and Rogue Waves represents its next major PC project.
The studio is positioning the new title around a combination of fast decision-making, deckbuilding experimentation and a distinctive surfing theme.
Rogue Waves Demo Is Available Now on Steam
With its demo now live, Rogue Waves offers players an early opportunity to test its mix of competitive surfing and card strategy.
The current build features more than 50 Rookie deck cards, over 40 run-altering stickers, six rival surfers and the high-risk rogue wave system. A full release date has not yet been announced.
