Packed Lair, an upcoming roguelike strategy game that combines spatial puzzles, base building and auto-battler combat, will launch for PC via Steam on Sept. 22, 2026. Developed by indie studio Fables of Wits and published by Mystic Forge, the game challenges players to build an efficient monster-filled lair while working with extremely limited space.
Packed Lair Sets September Steam Release
Announced Sept. 3, Packed Lair puts players in control of an evil lord facing a persistent problem: waves of heroes keep invading the lair.
There is another complication — space is scarce.
Instead of freely constructing a sprawling fortress, players must draft, rotate and position buildings within a cramped underground base. Every tile matters, turning base construction into a spatial puzzle where placement can determine whether a strategy succeeds or fails.
The concept combines elements of inventory-management puzzles with traditional base-building mechanics and roguelike progression.
Every Tile Matters When Building the Lair
Building placement plays a central role in Packed Lair. Players must arrange structures to create useful combinations, generate resources and prepare increasingly powerful groups of monsters.
Buildings Create and Strengthen Monster Armies
A carefully designed base ultimately becomes the foundation of the player’s army. Buildings can help generate, improve and scale minion forces before they are sent into combat.
Once preparations are complete, waves of invading heroes arrive and the monsters fight them through auto-battler mechanics.
Players do not directly control every movement of their minions during these encounters. Instead, success depends heavily on decisions made while constructing the lair and assembling the army.
The result is a cycle centered on planning first and then seeing whether that strategy survives actual combat.
Players Can Influence Auto-Battles With Spells
Although minions handle combat automatically, players are not completely removed from the battlefield.
The evil lord can cast spells during fights, allowing players to intervene at important moments. Properly timed abilities can potentially change the outcome of an encounter or help rescue a strategy that is beginning to collapse.
This system adds an active element to battles while maintaining the game’s auto-battler foundation.
Roguelike Runs Encourage New Strategies
Packed Lair also incorporates roguelike progression designed around experimentation.
Across different runs, players can unlock new buildings, discover combinations and expand their available options. As additional structures become available, there are more ways to optimize the limited space and create different monster-producing setups.
Build, Fight and Adapt
The core gameplay loop revolves around constructing a base, preparing an army, fighting invading heroes and adapting future strategies based on the outcome.
Different building combinations can produce new synergies, encouraging players to reconsider layouts rather than relying on a single design.
The game also reverses the familiar fantasy premise of protecting a kingdom from evil. In Packed Lair, the player is the villain, while traditional heroes serve as the invading force that must be stopped.

Packed Lair Demo Available Ahead of Sept. 22 Launch
Packed Lair will be released for PC through Steam on Sept. 22, 2026. A playable demo is available ahead of launch, giving PC players an opportunity to try its combination of spatial puzzle solving, base management and automated combat.
By making physical space a central strategic resource, Packed Lair adds a puzzle-focused approach to the base-building genre. Players will need to make every tile count as they construct their underground stronghold, assemble monster armies and defend their territory from an endless stream of would-be heroes.
