The 1997 strategy classic Culdcept is making its long-awaited return to modern consoles. Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute is now available digitally on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, expanding on the PC release that arrived in July.
Culdcept Returns With Board Game and Card Strategy
Clear River Games, City Connection and series creator Omiya Soft have brought Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute to a new generation of players with several quality-of-life improvements.
The game combines board-game movement, deck building, territory management and card-based combat. The updated release also introduces English subtitles for the first time, making the cult classic more accessible to Western audiences.
Set in the fantasy universe of Culdra Space, the game takes place in a world created by the powerful goddess Culdra. Players take the role of a Cepter, an adventurer who carries a self-built 50-card deck.
At the center of the story is Culdcept, a legendary book said to hold the power of creation. Players must travel across the board by rolling dice while building and defending territory and summoning creatures to fight for control.
Build Territory and Outsmart Rival Cepters
Players claim territory by placing creatures across the game board. Spell Cards can then be used to strengthen creatures, disrupt opponents and change the outcome of battles.
The combination of dice rolls and strategic card play means players must carefully consider each move. Manipulating the board, managing resources and anticipating an opponent’s strategy can all determine whether a match ends in victory or defeat.
This mix of mechanics helped establish Culdcept as a cult favorite, and the modern release is designed to preserve that core experience while making it easier to play today.
New Quality-of-Life Features
The First Saturn Tribute includes several features intended to streamline the original experience.
Rewind and Quick Save
Players can rewind the game to a previous point after passing a Checkpoint at a Fort or Castle. A separate Quick Save & Load function also allows saves and loads at any time without affecting the game’s standard save system.
Bonus Pack and Reveal Hands
The Bonus Pack increases the number of Reward Cards earned after matches and can be turned on or off through the options menu.
A new Reveal Hands feature keeps both the player’s hand and the opponent’s hand visible on screen. In the original game, this information was only available at certain times. The display automatically adjusts to the screen layout and can be disabled.
English and Japanese Language Support
Players can switch between Japanese and English, with English subtitles providing a significant accessibility upgrade for players experiencing the Saturn classic for the first time.
Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute Pricing and Release Date
The digital Standard Edition is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for a suggested retail price of $29.99.
The PC version is available through Steam for $29.99, €29.99 or £24.99.
A physical edition for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 is scheduled to launch on November 5, 2026, through Clear River Games.
A Classic Strategy Game Gets a Modern Release
With its combination of deck building, territory control, dice-based movement and fantasy combat, Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute brings one of the more unusual strategy experiences from the late 1990s to current gaming platforms.
The updated features and first-time English subtitles are intended to make the game more approachable while preserving the strategic systems that helped the original build its dedicated following.
