ALRUNA: END OF HISTORY Set for Steam Release on June 4, 2026

Date:

Independent game developer Niklas Hallin is preparing to launch ALRUNA: END OF HISTORY on Steam on June 4, 2026, continuing the dark fantasy universe introduced in the original Alruna and the Necro-Industrialists. Developed in Göteborg, Sweden, the new title expands the series with faster gameplay mechanics, surreal world-building, and a stronger emphasis on experimental pixel-art design.

While the game is not a direct narrative sequel, it returns players to a collapsing world dominated by the mysterious Necro-Industrialists, blending platforming action with philosophical and dystopian themes that are increasingly common in today’s indie gaming scene.

A Dark Pixel-Art Platformer With Experimental Design

In ALRUNA: END OF HISTORY, players once again take control of Alruna, a flower-nymph navigating decaying cathedrals and ruined industrial landscapes in search of salvation for herself and others. The game focuses heavily on movement-based gameplay, allowing players to jump, slide, and dash through hostile environments while uncovering the story hidden beneath the world’s collapse.

According to Hallin, the new installment pushes beyond the limits of traditional retro-inspired platformers.

Expanding the Possibilities of Pixel-Art Games

“I can’t stop making Alruna games,” Hallin said in a statement announcing the release. “They’re so pure and direct. Any cool idea, no matter how crazy, can fit in. This time I’m really trying to break the limits of a pixel-art sidescroller. What can you do with the format, if you are a bit daring?”

The game’s narrative leans into poetic and existential themes, describing a world emptied out by the Necro-Industrialists and centered around another mysterious dryad known as “Divinity’s Creature” and “Heaven’s Gate.” The story explores suffering, salvation, and transcendence — themes that place the game closer to art-house indie experiences than mainstream action titles.

The “Alruna Art Bomb” Backs Independent Artists

Alongside the game itself, Hallin has launched what he calls the “Alruna Art Bomb,” a large-scale collaborative art initiative supporting independent illustrators and emerging artists.

Supporting Queer and Emerging Creators

Hallin said the project was created partly in response to growing concerns about generative AI and the influence of large technology companies on creative industries.

“It’s important to keep the flame of genuine creativity alive,” Hallin said. “Especially in the face of robber-baron tech corporations and generative AI.”

Rather than spending money on traditional advertising campaigns, Hallin redirected the game’s marketing budget into commissioning artwork from nearly 40 artists. The project specifically sought contributions from queer creators, outsider artists, and newcomers trying to establish themselves in the industry.

The initiative arrives at a time when debates around AI-generated art, independent creators’ rights, and fair compensation continue to shape conversations across the U.S. entertainment and gaming sectors.

Soundtrack and Publishing Support

The game’s soundtrack is being handled by Burning Planet, a company that originally began as a music production studio for video games in 2015 before evolving into an indie-focused game publisher.

Burning Planet describes its publishing philosophy as treating indie games with the same energy and attitude as underground punk bands — a fitting match for the unconventional tone of the Alruna series.

Steam Wishlist and Review Access

Reviewers and streamers can request Steam download keys ahead of launch. The game is currently available for wishlisting on Steam, where players can also view trailers and additional promotional materials ahead of release.

Conclusion

With its blend of experimental platforming, surreal storytelling, and artist-focused promotion strategy, ALRUNA: END OF HISTORY stands out in an increasingly crowded indie gaming market. As retro-inspired titles continue to resonate with American PC players, Hallin’s latest project appears aimed at delivering both a challenging gameplay experience and a statement about independent creativity in the modern gaming industry.
