Indie action roguelite Into the Unwell will no longer launch in Early Access in 2026. Instead, publisher Coffee Stain Publishing and developer She Was Such A Good Horse announced the game has been delayed to 2027 as development expands toward a full release.
The announcement arrived in the form of a comedic mock documentary trailer, continuing the game’s offbeat tone while outlining the studio’s decision to extend production time for the cartoon-inspired roguelike.
Into the Unwell Moves Away From Early Access Launch
Originally planned for a 2026 Early Access debut, Into the Unwell is now targeting a complete launch sometime in 2027.
According to the developers, the delay followed what was jokingly described as a “cartoonishly hilarious accident involving drink cans and bubblegum.” The fictionalized explanation plays into the game’s exaggerated rubber-hose animation style and comedic presentation.
Despite the humorous framing, the studios confirmed the additional development time is intended to help deliver a larger and more polished final experience instead of launching in Early Access first.
Roguelike Action Game Features “Heavily Medicated Misfits”
Into the Unwell is described as a roguelike action game centered on chaotic combat and eccentric characters. The title leans heavily into vintage cartoon aesthetics inspired by early animation styles commonly associated with 1920s and 1930s “rubber hose” cartoons.
The game follows a cast of unusual and troubled characters navigating surreal environments while battling bizarre enemies in fast-paced roguelite gameplay.
The newly released trailer also includes additional footage teasing future content planned for the expanded release window.
Developers Use Humor to Address Delay Announcement
Creative Director Mårten Stockhaus delivered the delay news through a tongue-in-cheek statement referencing Våffeldagen, a Swedish holiday centered around waffles that is widely celebrated across the country each spring.
“Våffeldagen is one of the most important holidays in Sweden,” Stockhaus said. “But since we’re not that great at cleaning, I tripped on the massive pile of beer cans left after the festivities, smashing the Early Access disc in the fall.”
He added that the studio remains focused on creating the best possible version of the game before release.
“Like every dev crew running on dreams and a healthy amount of audacity, we’re hell-bent on dropping a full game that’s as good as we can possibly make it when we actually launch,” Stockhaus said.
Coffee Stain Continues Supporting Unconventional Indie Games
Coffee Stain Publishing also leaned into the joke-filled announcement style. CEO Anton Westbergh said continued investment in Into the Unwell aligns with the company’s long-standing interest in unusual and experimental games.
“Throwing more money at Into The Unwell makes total business sense for Coffee Stain,” Westbergh said. “By doing so we stick to our long and proud tradition of investing in games featuring weird animals.”
The Sweden-based publisher has become well known within the indie gaming industry for backing unconventional titles with strong comedic or sandbox-focused identities.
Coffee Stain’s catalog includes successful games such as Goat Simulator, Satisfactory, Deep Rock Galactic, Valheim, and Goat Simulator 3.
Roguelike Genre Continues Strong Momentum
The delay comes as roguelike and roguelite games remain one of the most active genres in indie game development. Titles blending randomized progression systems, stylized art direction, and replay-focused gameplay continue to perform well on PC storefronts like Steam.
Games with distinctive visual identities have been especially successful in standing out within the increasingly crowded indie market, and Into the Unwell appears positioned to lean heavily into its vintage cartoon presentation.
Conclusion
While Into the Unwell will no longer arrive in Early Access this year, the developers say the delay will allow more time to expand and refine the experience ahead of a full 2027 launch. With its surreal humor, rubber-hose animation style, and roguelike gameplay systems, the game remains one of the more unconventional indie projects currently in development.
