Commodore 64C Ultimate Launches With Slimline Retro Design, Modern Features and Three Editions Starting at $299.99

Date:

Commodore has announced that its new Commodore 64C Ultimate retro computer has begun reaching customers who placed preorders, with general sales now open ahead of the 2026 holiday shopping season. The updated machine recreates the slimline design of the original Commodore 64C while introducing modern connectivity, FPGA-based hardware, and compatibility with classic software and peripherals.

Announced on October 27, 2026, in Dover, Delaware, the release marks the latest addition to Commodore’s revived 8-bit computer lineup. The new system is available in three editions, with prices ranging from $299.99 to $499.99.

Commodore 64C Ultimate Recreates the Classic 1986 Slimline Computer

The Commodore 64C Ultimate draws inspiration from the original Commodore 64C, introduced in 1986 as a redesigned version of the popular Commodore 64 home computer.

Unlike the earlier model’s distinctive, bulky “breadbin” appearance, the 64C featured a slimmer, more contemporary case.

To reproduce that design accurately, Commodore says it reacquired the original manufacturing tooling used to produce the 1986 computer’s enclosure.

The new hardware retains the familiar appearance while adding modern capabilities intended to make the system easier to use with contemporary displays and accessories.

Commodore Celebrates 40 Years of the 64C Design

The launch coincides with the 40th anniversary of the original Commodore 64C.

“While more advanced Commodore machines in 1986 were being embraced by those looking towards the next generation, the 64C was able to stand port-to-port with its newer siblings to show that there was plenty of life left in the 8-bit generation, “said Peri Fractic, President & CEO, Commodore International. “The same can be said for the 8-bit generation in 2026. New software is in development from our incredible community every day, creating a thriving ecosystem for gamers, musicians, programmers and more. This truly is our Ultimate era.”

FPGA Technology Delivers Hardware-Level Commodore 64 Compatibility

Like the Commodore 64 Ultimate released in 2025, the new 64C Ultimate uses Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology rather than relying exclusively on conventional software emulation.

FPGA hardware can be configured to reproduce the behavior and timing of older computer systems, providing an approach to recreating classic hardware.

Commodore says its Ultimate lineup delivers cycle-accurate operation and supports up to 99% compatibility with original software and peripherals.

Supported legacy accessories include monitors, printers, joysticks, and game cartridges.

The company also points to the reception of its 2025 Commodore 64 Ultimate, which received a “10/10 masterpiece” assessment from IGN.

HDMI, USB and Updated Firmware Add Modern Convenience

The Commodore 64C Ultimate includes HDMI and USB support, allowing users to connect the retro computer to modern equipment.

The new version also ships with updated firmware while maintaining the performance characteristics of the earlier Commodore 64 Ultimate.

Another addition is support for standard USB mice, expanding the system’s usability beyond traditional keyboard and joystick controls.

GEOS Suite Brings Productivity Software to the Retro Computer

Although Commodore’s original home computers are closely associated with classic gaming, the 64C Ultimate is also designed for programming and productivity.

The machine includes a full GEOS software suite, offering access to applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, file managers, and painting tools.

With USB mouse support, users can navigate these applications using a familiar pointing device.

The system also provides an introduction to BASIC programming, allowing users to explore the coding environment that helped introduce many people to home computing during the 1980s.

More Than 100 Games and Demos Included

Every Commodore 64C Ultimate ships with an updated USB Cassette containing more than 100 games, demonstrations, and other software.

The included collection provides immediate access to retro content without requiring owners to locate original cassette tapes or other aging storage media.

Commodore has also recreated the style of the original 64C user guide and includes quick-start instructions with the hardware.

Commodore 64C Ultimate Prices and Editions

The Commodore 64C Ultimate is available in three configurations, each offering a different exterior design and set of cosmetic features.

Edition Price Key features
BASIC Beige $299.99 Replica of the original Commodore 64C appearance
Starlight Edition $349.99 Translucent case with game-reactive LED case and keyboard lighting
Founder’s Edition $499.99 PVD gold keycaps, 24-karat gold-plated badges, and translucent white case

Founder’s Edition Includes Exclusive Collectibles

Customers purchasing the Founder’s Edition will also receive additional commemorative items, shipped separately from the computer.

These include a Gold Seal commemorative Commodore Share Certificate, a Commodore flag, and a necklace featuring 24-karat gold Commodore 64 and Power badge designs.

The premium edition is positioned as a collector-focused option, while the BASIC Beige model offers the lowest entry price.

Preorders Begin Arriving Ahead of Christmas

Commodore previously committed to delivering preordered 64C Ultimate systems before Christmas 2026.

The company says some customers have already received their computers, with the product now available for general purchase.

The announcement does not specify delivery estimates for all new orders or provide detailed regional shipping schedules.

Customers can find purchasing information and additional product details through the official Commodore website.

Commodore Expands Its Retro Computing Lineup for 2026

The Commodore 64C Ultimate combines a historically accurate exterior with modern connectivity, FPGA-based hardware, productivity applications, and a collection of classic software.

With three editions starting at $299.99, the launch targets retro gaming enthusiasts, collectors, and users interested in exploring traditional home computing.

Its arrival ahead of the holiday season marks another step in Commodore’s effort to bring its 8-bit computing heritage to a new generation while supporting the community that continues to develop software for the platform.
