Classic Card-and-Board Game Hybrid Returns With New Features and Online Play
Fans of strategy games and long-running Japanese franchises have a new title to explore as Culdcept BEGINS officially launches today as a digital download for both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
Published by Clear River Games in partnership with Neos Corporation, the release marks the first major new installment in the Culdcept franchise in roughly a decade. Known for blending board game mechanics with collectible card strategy, the series has built a dedicated following since its debut in 1997.
A Long-Awaited Return for the Culdcept Franchise
Originally developed by Omiya Soft, the Culdcept series has appeared across multiple gaming platforms over the past 25 years and has surpassed one million units shipped worldwide, including digital sales.
The franchise has earned a reputation among strategy enthusiasts for combining the unpredictability of dice-based board games with the tactical depth of deck-building card games. That formula returns in Culdcept BEGINS, bringing both longtime fans and newcomers into its fantasy-inspired world.
The Story Behind the Book of Creation
The game’s narrative revolves around the legendary Book of Creation, a powerful artifact created by the goddess Culdra. Fragments of this book, known as “Culds,” grant special abilities to those who possess them. These individuals are called Cepters.
Players follow the journey of Kamru, a young boy recognized for his extraordinary potential. After being selected to join the kingdom’s prestigious Royal Cepter Guard Regiment, Kamru becomes involved in a growing conflict that threatens the entire continent. As the story unfolds, he develops his abilities and uncovers the true meaning of being a Cepter.
How Gameplay Combines Strategy and Chance
At its core, Culdcept BEGINS mixes elements of tabletop gaming and strategic card battles.
Players move around a game board by rolling dice, claiming territories, collecting tolls from opponents, and engaging in battles for control of key locations. Success requires balancing luck with long-term planning, as players must expand their influence and accumulate enough magical power to achieve victory.
The game includes approximately 400 cards, offering a wide variety of tactical possibilities.
Creature Cards
Creature Cards summon units that can defend territory or attack rival lands. Each creature belongs to one of five elemental attributes and possesses unique abilities that influence gameplay.
Item Cards
Item Cards provide support during combat. Beyond increasing offensive or defensive strength, many items feature special effects capable of dramatically changing battle outcomes.
Spell Cards
Spell Cards affect the broader flow of a match. Skilled use of these cards can disrupt opponents, alter board conditions, and create opportunities for strategic advantages.
Players build custom decks—known as Books—by selecting 40 cards from these categories, allowing for personalized strategies and playstyles.
Single-Player, Competitive, and Online Modes Available
Culdcept BEGINS offers several ways to play.
The game features a dedicated Story Mode for solo players, while Versus Mode allows competitors to sharpen their skills against AI-controlled opponents.
For those seeking human competition, the Online Versus Mode enables matches against players worldwide. Users can create custom rooms for private battles or take advantage of the new Quick Match system to find opponents more quickly.
These multiplayer features aim to expand the game’s reach beyond its traditional fanbase and introduce the strategic experience to a broader audience.
Nintendo Switch 2 Features Add New Ways to Play
Players using Nintendo Switch 2 can access several platform-specific enhancements.
The game supports Nintendo’s GameShare functionality, allowing up to four people to play cooperatively or competitively across Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 systems, even if some participants do not own a copy of the game.
Additionally, Nintendo Switch 2 users can take advantage of the console’s mouse-style controls, providing an alternative input option for players who prefer more precise navigation.
Early Purchase Bonus Available Through September
Players who purchase Culdcept BEGINS before September 17 will receive an early purchase bonus that includes legacy character avatars from previous entries in the series as well as exclusive book cover designs inspired by the franchise’s history.
A New Chapter for a Cult Strategy Favorite
With its combination of board game mechanics, deck-building strategy, fantasy storytelling, and online competition, Culdcept BEGINS marks the return of one of gaming’s more distinctive strategy franchises. As the series enters a new generation on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, both longtime fans and newcomers now have the opportunity to experience a formula that has remained unique in the strategy genre for nearly three decades.
