Funcom Expands Open-World Survival Game Across Consoles With Major Gameplay Updates
Norwegian developer and publisher Funcom has announced that Dune: Awakening will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on Sept. 22, 2026, bringing the survival game based on Frank Herbert’s iconic science fiction universe to consoles for the first time.
The company also confirmed the release will introduce a major standalone single-player mode, expanded story content, gameplay improvements, and support for Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere.
Inspired by Dune and the recent film adaptations directed by Denis Villeneuve and produced by Legendary Entertainment, the game continues Funcom’s long-running push into large-scale multiplayer survival experiences.
Console Release Brings Optimized Gameplay and 60 FPS Support
According to Funcom, the console editions will offer the same core experience available on PC while adding optimized controls and user interface adjustments tailored for gamepads.
The company said both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will support 60 frames per second in performance mode.
Preorders are already available on both platforms. Pricing includes:
- Standard Edition: $49.99
- Deluxe Edition: approximately $69.99 with early access
- Ultimate Edition: approximately $89.99 with additional bonuses and early access
Funcom CEO Rui Casais described the launch as “a major achievement” for the studio after more than a year of additional development work aimed at improving the overall experience across all platforms.
New Single-Player Mode Expands Accessibility
One of the largest additions arriving in September is a fully featured single-player mode.
Previously focused heavily on multiplayer survival gameplay, Dune: Awakening will now allow players to experience the game solo with adjustable difficulty settings and customizable gameplay options.
Difficulty and Server Controls Added
Players will be able to customize numerous gameplay systems, including:
- Combat difficulty
- Resource gathering rates
- Experience gain
- Survival mechanics
- Progression pacing
The update also expands support for private servers, giving players greater control over multiplayer experiences with friends.
These additions reflect broader industry trends toward making survival games more accessible to players who prefer solo play or cooperative experiences over large-scale online competition.
Story Campaign Receives Full Conclusion
Funcom also confirmed that September’s release will complete the storyline introduced in “Book One,” providing a full narrative arc for players exploring the desert world of Arrakis.
Creative Director Joel Bylos said the update will allow players to experience the story “from beginning to end” while promising additional content connected to the recent Dune films later this year.
The game blends survival systems, RPG mechanics, exploration, crafting, combat, and large-scale world-building elements set across the harsh deserts of Arrakis.
PvP Changes and Gameplay Improvements Arrive Across Platforms
New and returning players will also gain access to numerous gameplay changes introduced throughout the past year on PC.
Major updates include:
- Optional PvP systems
- Expanded PvE gameplay
- Redesigned world balance
- Vehicle recovery systems
- Base rebuilding tools
- Character respecialization options
- Removal of certain in-game taxes
- Additional map locations and story content
The optional PvP structure allows players to explore most of the game in PvE mode while still participating in faction-based conflicts if desired.
The Polar Cap Expansion Planned for Later This Year
Funcom also revealed plans for a new free map update called The Polar Cap, inspired by the Hagga Basin region and located in the frozen northern areas of Arrakis.
The update will introduce new survival mechanics, additional content, and a rare icy biome within the otherwise desert-focused world.
Xbox Game Pass and Cross-Platform Features Confirmed
Dune: Awakening will also launch on Xbox Game Pass on Sept. 22.
The game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing players to share progression between Xbox and PC versions while enabling cross-platform play.
Funcom also confirmed compatibility with:
- Steam Deck
- GeForce Now
- ROG Xbox Ally
- Xbox Cloud Gaming
The broad platform support reflects the increasing importance of flexible gaming ecosystems that allow players to move between consoles, handheld devices, and cloud streaming services.
Dune Franchise Continues Expanding in Gaming
The release of Dune: Awakening marks another major expansion of the Dune franchise into interactive entertainment.
As science fiction franchises continue finding success across gaming, streaming, and theatrical films, publishers are increasingly investing in large-scale adaptations tied to recognizable intellectual properties.
With its combination of open-world survival gameplay, RPG progression, and cinematic storytelling, Dune: Awakening aims to deliver one of the most ambitious interactive interpretations of Arrakis to date while reaching a wider audience through its upcoming console launch.
