Indie Quest 2026 Showcase Introduces Retro-Style RPG Inspired by Classic PlayStation Games
A new indie role-playing game inspired by the golden age of Japanese RPGs has officially been unveiled during the Indie Quest 2026 Showcase.
Full Circle, developed by solo creator 2ndPlayerGames and published by Deck13 Spotlight, blends retro PlayStation-era design with modern gameplay systems and visuals. The upcoming title is scheduled for release on PC and consoles, with its first playable demo set to debut later this year at Gamescom, one of the gaming industry’s largest annual events.
The game pays tribute to classic JRPG franchises that helped define gaming during the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period many U.S. players still associate with the original PlayStation’s rise in popularity.
A Post-Apocalyptic World Above the Clouds
Set in a bleak future where humanity has been driven from the surface of the planet, Full Circle takes place in a world overrun by mutated creatures and deadly monsters.
To survive, the remnants of civilization have retreated into floating cities suspended high above the earth. Young warriors are trained to venture into the dangerous wastelands below in order to protect what remains of humanity.
The story begins as a routine mission beyond the safety of the cities uncovers shocking truths, including rival settlements, hidden survivors, and secrets that challenge everything the protagonists believed about their world.
The game’s narrative focuses heavily on themes of survival, identity, and coming of age, blending emotional storytelling with large-scale worldbuilding common in classic JRPGs.
Inspired by the PlayStation JRPG Golden Era
Developer 2ndPlayerGames says Full Circle draws direct inspiration from iconic titles of the original PlayStation era, including franchises such as Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Lunar, and The Legend of Dragoon.
Rather than simply recreating retro mechanics, the project aims to modernize the traditional JRPG formula through updated controls, smoother pacing, and enhanced visuals built around a 2.5HD pixel art presentation.
The developer describes the project as a tribute to the games that shaped his childhood while also introducing gameplay ideas that were difficult to achieve during the technical limitations of the late 1990s.
That blend of nostalgia and modernization has become increasingly popular among indie developers, particularly as retro-inspired RPGs continue finding success on Steam and modern consoles in the U.S. gaming market.
Combat and Exploration Designed for Modern Players
One of the game’s core mechanics is its “constant flow combat” system, which combines turn-based strategy with real-time timing elements.
Players will be able to chain attacks, execute combos through timed inputs, and swap party members during battle without interrupting the pace of combat. The system is designed to preserve the tactical depth of classic JRPGs while making encounters feel more fluid and responsive.
The game also features a large cast of playable characters, each with unique abilities that can be used both in combat and while exploring the world.
Players can build customized teams by mixing four active party members with four reserve characters, experimenting with gear combinations, combat synergies, and specialized skills.
Outside of battle, exploration plays a major role in progression. Players can tame creatures, salvage technology, and uncover hidden quests scattered throughout the post-apocalyptic landscape.
Locations include floating cities, ancient ruins, isolated survivor communities, and untamed wilderness areas, each with distinct cultures and histories.
Solo Developer Brings Personal Vision to Life
Full Circle is being developed by 2ndPlayerGames, a solo developer based in Peru who says his love for JRPGs began while watching his brother play classic games during childhood.
Originally interested in composing music for RPGs, he eventually taught himself game development and now describes Full Circle as his most ambitious project to date.
The game was officially introduced during Indie Quest 2026 and is currently in development for PC and consoles. A playable demo is expected to be available at Gamescom later this year, giving players their first hands-on look at the retro-inspired adventure.
With renewed interest in classic-style RPGs continuing across the gaming industry, Full Circle appears positioned to appeal to longtime fans of PlayStation-era JRPGs while also reaching a newer generation of players looking for story-driven adventures with modern gameplay enhancements.
