There are good reasons why you shouldn’t turn off your computer overnight. Not only because of the faster start in the morning, but also because of the improved functions of the system itself, experts say.

Practical reasons

The first and foremost reason you should leave your computer on overnight is practical. Instead of waiting for it to start, you are always ready to go. A typical system takes about 30 seconds to start up. If you have a large number of programs that start at startup, the computer will take longer to start. If you leave your computer on, you don’t have to worry about it.

It takes a few seconds to start the computer from sleep, and best of all, all downloaded applications will remain active.

If your computer is on all the time, it may be running software that would not otherwise be available, including the Remote Desktop option. You don’t have to bother looking for an important file you have on your computer. All you have to do is connect to your phone or tablet and grab everything you need from your computer.

Benefits of turning off a computer

Can you really reduce the longevity of your computer by turning it on? If you turn off all other devices after you stop using them, there is no reason not to do the same for your computer.

Hardware cannot work forever. The monitor backlight can last for tens of thousands of hours, the laptop battery runs around 300 charge cycles, while part of the SSD supports only 3000 program delete cycles. Actually, in most cases, you will update your computer before the components stop working, but by leaving your computer on, you reduce the lifespan by a small percentage; a bigger problem is the heat generated by using the computer.
