Independent developer Why Knot Studio and Abu Dhabi-based publisher Red Dunes Games have released Princess of the Water Lilies – Definitive Edition for PlayStation 5. The updated version of the hand-drawn puzzle-platformer expands on the original PC release with revised boss encounters, new artwork, additional cinematics and other gameplay and presentation improvements.
Princess of the Water Lilies Comes to PlayStation 5
The PlayStation 5 edition launched on September 17, 2026, following the game’s original PC release in late 2025.
According to the developers, requests for a console version helped prompt work on the Definitive Edition. Rather than simply porting the existing game, Why Knot Studio revised several elements, including visuals, audio, challenges and character presentation.
The result is an expanded version designed to address areas the studio wanted to improve after the PC launch.
Hand-Drawn Adventure Combines Platforming and Puzzles
Princess of the Water Lilies is a side-scrolling puzzle-platforming adventure set in a hand-drawn storybook world.
The game follows Princess, a distinctive flat-faced cat raised by a family of frogs. Players guide her through forests, caves and other environments while navigating platforming challenges, solving environmental puzzles and discovering hidden areas.
The adventure uses relatively little dialogue, instead relying on its environments, animation and live-recorded orchestral soundtrack to tell much of its story.
While the opening sections are designed to be approachable, later areas introduce more complicated pathways, obstacles and creatures.
Princess Uses a Magical Purr to Change the Environment
Princess’ primary ability is a magical purr that can heal damaged environments and interact with the world around her.
The power can make plants bloom, activate machinery and restore areas affected by corruption. Healing certain parts of the environment can also raise bridges or reveal previously inaccessible paths.
These abilities form an important part of the game’s puzzle-solving and exploration systems.
Boss Battles Focus on Healing Instead of Defeating Enemies
The game’s approach to boss encounters differs from many traditional platformers.
Rather than defeating major creatures through conventional violence, Princess uses her healing abilities to remove the corruption affecting them and ultimately free them.
The structure reinforces the game’s broader emphasis on restoration while still providing increasingly demanding encounters as players progress.
Hidden treasures and secret routes are also spread throughout the different biomes, encouraging exploration beyond the main path.
Definitive Edition Revises Bosses and Difficulty
The PS5 Definitive Edition introduces several changes compared with the original PC version.
Boss Encounters Receive New Attack Patterns
Boss battles have been revised with tighter attack patterns, more dynamic phases and balance changes across the available difficulty settings.
Difficulty modes have also been adjusted to provide a smoother transition from the game’s introductory sections into its more demanding platforming and boss encounters.
Why Knot Studio has also updated selected in-game assets and polished visual effects to improve consistency and make gameplay feedback clearer.
New Gallery and Cinematic Cutscenes Added
The Definitive Edition includes a new gallery featuring hand-painted splash artwork that unlocks as players progress.
Additional cinematic cutscenes have been incorporated into the story, while new sound effects expand the game’s audio presentation.
Selected visual assets have also been repainted as part of the studio’s effort to create a more consistent art style across the adventure.
