Zozo and the Lost Dreams Brings Cartoon-Inspired Metroidvania Adventure to Tokyo Game Show

Date:

Zozo and the Lost Dreams, a new platforming Metroidvania inspired by classic Saturday morning cartoons, is heading to Tokyo Game Show, where developers Red Dunes Games and Agate will showcase the colorful action-adventure title.

Built around a mix of exploration, platforming, combat and dreamlike storytelling, the game follows a 13-year-old aspiring superhero whose experiments unexpectedly leave him trapped inside his own dreams.

Zozo’s Superhero Dream Becomes a Real Adventure

At the center of Zozo and the Lost Dreams is Zozo, a 13-year-old boy determined to become a superhero. With assistance from his brilliant but eccentric neighbor, Professor Aisha, he creates a machine capable of transporting him into his dreams.

The invention initially allows Zozo to experience the adventures he has imagined. However, a mysterious incident leaves him unable to escape the dream world, transforming his fantasy into a dangerous journey home.

Players will guide Zozo through a collection of colorful and unpredictable environments populated by unusual characters and enemies. Each dream introduces different themes, rules and challenges while contributing to a broader mystery surrounding Zozo’s situation.

The concept has been developed with creative direction from Sultan Al Darmaki of Red Dunes Games in collaboration with Agate Studio.

Pixel-Art Characters Meet Detailed Dream Environments

One of the game’s defining elements is its visual presentation. Zozo and the Lost Dreams combines pixel-art character sprites with rasterized environments, creating an aesthetic intended to capture the exaggerated appearance of traditional animated cartoons while presenting it through a contemporary video game format.

That cartoon influence extends beyond the visuals into the game’s combat mechanics.

Knockback System Adds Chain-Reaction Combat

Attacking enemies can knock them backward into other opponents, potentially triggering chain reactions across an encounter. The developers compare the resulting interactions to pinball or bowling, giving battles an intentionally playful and chaotic quality.

Players will also have access to acrobatic movement abilities as they leap, dash and fight their way through the game’s different environments.

Progression will unlock additional abilities and upgrades, which can then be used to revisit earlier locations. Returning to previous dream worlds may reveal secret paths, new areas and additional pieces of the story that were inaccessible during the player’s first visit.

Episodic Structure Draws From Saturday Morning Cartoons

The developers are also using an episodic structure designed to reinforce the game’s animated television inspiration. Individual dream adventures are intended to function as distinctive episodes while gradually contributing to a larger narrative and eventual finale.

Agate described the approach as an attempt to make players feel as though they have entered an animated series rather than simply watched one.

“Our game brings the Saturday morning cartoon experience to life through episodic storytelling. Each episode delivers a self-contained adventure while building toward a larger finale, with opening and ending theme songs adding an authentic nostalgic touch. Players don’t just watch the cartoon – they step into it.”

Opening and ending theme songs are part of that presentation, further drawing on the conventions of animated television programming.

Each Dream Introduces New Themes and Challenges

Rather than relying on a single environment throughout the adventure, Zozo and the Lost Dreams moves between handcrafted dreamscapes with their own characters, rules, enemies and visual identities.

Exploration is paired with logical puzzles, platforming challenges and combat encounters. Players will also meet an assortment of unusual characters and form new relationships while attempting to uncover the mystery behind Zozo’s predicament.

The Metroidvania structure encourages players to explore previously visited areas after acquiring new abilities, providing opportunities to locate hidden routes and discover additional content.

Red Dunes Games and Agate Collaborate on the Project

Agate International is an Indonesian game development company headquartered in Bandung. Established in 2009, the studio says it has contributed to more than 250 games and worked with more than 200 global clients across platforms including Android, iOS, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Steam.

Red Dunes Games is an independent developer and publisher headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The company develops and publishes original titles while collaborating with international development partners.

With its combination of cartoon-inspired storytelling, Metroidvania exploration, acrobatic platforming and chain-reaction combat, Zozo and the Lost Dreams is positioning its dream worlds as individual adventures connected by a larger mystery. Its Tokyo Game Show appearance will provide another opportunity for players to see how the collaboration between Red Dunes Games and Agate translates Saturday morning cartoon influences into an interactive adventure.
