Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition, a remastered version of the full-motion video boxing game originally developed by Digital Pictures, is receiving a numbered physical edition for PlayStation 5. Limited Run Games announced the release in partnership with Pioneer II and Screaming Villains, with pre-orders opening September 1, 2026.
Classic FMV Boxing Game Returns in 4K
Originally released during the SEGA CD era, Prize Fighter places players in the role of an up-and-coming boxer attempting to fight through the professional ranks and ultimately compete for the heavyweight championship.
Rather than presenting the action from a conventional third-person perspective, the game uses a first-person viewpoint combined with full-motion video, putting players directly into the gloves of the fighter.
Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition rebuilds and remasters the cult classic for modern hardware. The updated release features enhanced 4K video alongside smoother gameplay mechanics and several quality-of-life improvements designed to modernize the original experience.
The remaster also includes additional bonus content.
Numbered Physical Edition Coming to PlayStation 5
Limited Run Games will release an exclusive numbered physical version of Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition for PlayStation 5.
The physical package is priced at $29.99 in the United States, with regional pricing also listed at €33.95 and $42.99 CAD.
The package includes a numbered PS5 game case, high-resolution cover artwork, the game disc and an eight-page booklet.
The release continues Limited Run Games’ focus on producing physical editions of games that might otherwise primarily reach players through digital storefronts. For collectors of SEGA CD-era titles and full-motion video games, the new edition provides a modern physical version of a title originally associated with early 1990s CD-based gaming.
Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition Pre-Order Dates
Pre-orders for the numbered physical edition opened September 1, 2026, at noon ET.
Orders will remain available through October 4 at 11:59 p.m. ET. The physical edition is being offered exclusively through Limited Run Games.
The defined ordering period gives buyers just over a month to reserve the PlayStation 5 edition.
A Modern Revival of a SEGA CD Cult Classic
The original Prize Fighter emerged during an era when developers were experimenting heavily with CD-ROM technology and full-motion video. Games built around filmed footage became particularly associated with systems such as the SEGA CD, offering cinematic presentation that was difficult to reproduce on cartridge-based consoles of the period.
The remastered edition preserves that FMV-driven identity while upgrading the presentation for modern displays. Enhanced 4K footage represents one of the most significant visual changes, while gameplay refinements are intended to make the boxing experience smoother for contemporary players.
For longtime fans, the physical PS5 release also provides a collectible version of a game rooted in an unusual period of video game history.
Prize Fighter Returns for a New Generation
With Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition, Pioneer II and Screaming Villains are bringing the first-person FMV boxing title to modern hardware with upgraded visuals, gameplay improvements and additional content.
Limited Run Games’ numbered PlayStation 5 edition adds a physical option for collectors, with pre-orders available through October 4, 2026.
