Toada Brava Brings Hand-Drawn Turn-Based RPG Adventure to PC via Steam

Date:

Brazilian indie developer Asteristic Game Studio is developing Toada Brava, a hand-drawn 2D role-playing game that combines turn-based combat, timing mechanics and a fantasy setting influenced by Latin American geography and culture. The game is headed to PC via Steam, where a playable demo is already available.

Toada Brava Draws Inspiration From Classic JRPGs

Developed and published by Curitiba-based Asteristic Game Studio, Toada Brava takes inspiration from classic role-playing games including Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG and Vagrant Story.

The adventure centers on Kako, a young protagonist whose quiet life with his mother, Matilda, is disrupted when the Duke of Santacrúz arrives on their land and announces plans to use it for gold extraction.

Matilda responds by punching the duke, leading to her arrest and imprisonment in the Santacrúz Prison Complex. Kako attempts to enter the duke’s property and rescue her but is captured as well.

Players must then help Kako escape the Santacrúz Dungeons, find his mother and assemble an unlikely group of allies along the way.

Turn-Based Battles Put an Emphasis on Timing

Combat in Toada Brava uses a turn-based system enhanced by timing-based mechanics. Players can encounter rioting prisoners and military forces working for the Duke of Santacrúz as they attempt to escape the prison complex.

Battles begin without lengthy transitions or traditional random encounters, keeping exploration and combat closely connected.

Timing plays an important role in both offense and defense, with correctly executed actions helping players inflict damage or protect themselves from enemy attacks.

Weapons Can Be Used During Exploration

Weapons are not limited to combat. Players can use them to interact with objects throughout the environment, potentially revealing items or allowing Kako to launch a preemptive strike against an unsuspecting enemy.

The game also introduces music-based magical abilities. Players can use different instruments to perform songs that summon magical attacks during battle.

As the adventure progresses, Kako can recruit other prisoners and heroes. Each companion has individual characteristics and special attacks, expanding the tactical options available during combat.

Santacrúz Story Mixes Revolution and Supernatural Mystery

Escaping prison is only part of Kako’s journey.

The Duke of Santacrúz possesses supernatural powers that appear to extend beyond ordinary human abilities. Players will gradually uncover the origins of those powers while learning more about the secrets surrounding the aristocrat and his control over the region.

The story also connects Kako’s rescue mission with a broader revolutionary struggle, placing the protagonist and his companions against the forces protecting the duke and his gold-mining interests.

Latin American cultural and geographic influences help shape the fictional world, giving Toada Brava a visual and narrative identity distinct from the Japanese RPGs that inspired its gameplay.

Hand-Drawn 2D Art Defines Toada Brava’s Visual Style

Asteristic Game Studio is building Toada Brava around fully hand-drawn 2D artwork, including its environments and expressive character designs.

The developer is also emphasizing character-driven storytelling, with Kako meeting a varied group of companions throughout his escape. Their individual personalities, abilities and combat techniques are intended to play a significant role in both the story and battle system.

Key Gameplay Features

Among the main features planned for Toada Brava are instant battles without random encounters, hand-drawn 2D environments and characters, timing-based attacks and defensive actions, interactive weapons and music-powered magical abilities.

Players will also be able to recruit companions with their own special attacks and personality traits while exploring the Santacrúz Dungeons and uncovering the mysteries surrounding the duke.

Toada Brava Demo Available on Steam

Toada Brava remains in development for PC, with a final release date yet to be announced. A playable demo is currently available through Steam, allowing players to sample the game’s hand-drawn presentation, exploration and turn-based combat mechanics.

With its Latin American-inspired fantasy world, unconventional cast and combination of classic RPG design with timing-focused battles, Toada Brava aims to put its own spin on the traditional turn-based role-playing formula when the full game arrives on PC.
