Scale the Depths Launches on Steam After Viral Demo Success

Date:

After building momentum through a widely shared demo and strong Steam wishlist numbers, indie fishing game Scale the Depths has officially launched on PC via Steam. Developed by Canadian studio Glass Gecko Games and published by Pretty Soon, the title blends casual fishing mechanics with quirky humor, progression systems, and an unexpectedly mysterious underwater storyline.

The game arrives following a breakout demo period that attracted more than 300,000 players and generated over 200,000 wishlists ahead of release.

Casual Fishing Gameplay Expands Into Full Adventure

At its core, Scale the Depths revolves around a simple gameplay loop: catch fish, scale and prepare them, serve customers, upgrade equipment, and dive deeper into the ocean.

The full release builds on that formula with additional locations, fish species, collectibles, upgrades, customization options, and narrative elements. Players control a small fishmonger robot tasked with supplying seafood to a growing list of unusual customers.

Some customers are ordinary animals, while others lean into folklore and fantasy. According to the developers, players may encounter legendary creatures inspired by myths such as the Loch Ness Monster and Kelpie during their journey.

Strange Customers and Deep-Sea Mysteries

The game’s humor and eccentric tone appear to be a major part of its appeal. While the gameplay initially presents itself as a straightforward fishing simulator, the deeper players explore, the more mysterious the world becomes.

Players gradually uncover hidden artifacts, messages in bottles, environmental puzzles, and lore connected to the robot’s mission and the strange underwater environments it visits.

The game also encourages experimentation with equipment and fish preparation tools. Players can reportedly scale fish using everything from butter knives to oversized fantasy weapons, adding a deliberately absurd twist to the otherwise relaxing gameplay loop.

Real-World Locations Inspire In-Game Areas

Several environments in Scale the Depths draw inspiration from recognizable real-world locations, including Scotland’s Loch Ness and the remote Pacific Ocean region known as Point Nemo, often referred to as the oceanic point farthest from land.

Those locations help ground the game’s fantasy-inspired narrative while giving players a sense of exploration familiar to fans of modern indie adventure titles.

Gear Upgrades and Boat Customization

As players earn larger tips from satisfied customers, they can invest in upgraded tools, equipment, and boat customizations. Progression systems allow access to deeper waters where larger fish, tougher challenges, and more hidden secrets become available.

The developers say the game balances cozy, low-pressure gameplay with collectible hunting and light mystery-solving elements that encourage long-term exploration.

Indie Fishing Games Continue to Grow in Popularity

The launch of Scale the Depths comes amid growing interest in cozy and unconventional indie simulation games on PC platforms. Titles focused on relaxing gameplay, progression systems, and stylized humor have become increasingly popular with players looking for alternatives to more competitive online games.

The game’s viral success during its demo phase reflects the growing role Steam wishlists, social media clips, and livestream exposure play in helping smaller independent titles reach mainstream audiences.

Canadian Developer Expands Its Reach

Glass Gecko Games, based in Canada, began as a small group of friends focused on creating experimental and accessible gaming experiences. The release of Scale the Depths marks one of the studio’s most visible launches to date.

Publisher Pretty Soon, headquartered in Poland, has also developed a growing portfolio of indie-focused releases, including titles such as Backpack Hero and Havendock.

With its combination of cozy fishing mechanics, comedic presentation, and mysterious underwater storytelling, Scale the Depths is positioning itself as one of the more unusual indie game launches of the summer.
