Indie developer Gritty Piggy and publisher Assemble Entertainment have announced Sin or Suffer, a story-driven survival-horror JRPG that combines a brutal medieval prison setting with turn-based combat, exploration and consequential player choices. The game is planned for release on Steam for PC in 2027.
Set inside a prison devastated by a violent uprising, Sin or Suffer places players in a world where the guards have disappeared and surviving inmates have seized control. What initially appears to be a fight for survival gradually develops into a supernatural mystery centered on an unseen force known as Sin.
A Medieval Prison Becomes a Survival-Horror Nightmare
Players take the role of a broken prisoner forced to descend deeper into the prison while searching for answers about what happened during the riot. The journey takes the character through increasingly dangerous environments populated by violent convicts and other disturbing threats.
At the center of the story is Sin, a mysterious force capable of distorting bodies, minds and reality. As players explore deeper areas of the prison, the narrative is designed to shift away from conventional prison horror toward increasingly grotesque and personal psychological themes.
Gritty Piggy cites Fear & Hunger, Look Outside and Berserk among the inspirations behind the game’s oppressive atmosphere, disturbing encounters and dark-fantasy presentation.
Turn-Based Combat Focuses on Deliberate Decisions
Rather than relying on fast action, Sin or Suffer uses deliberate turn-based combat. Battles include an enemy mutilation system, adding another layer of strategy to encounters and reinforcing the game’s graphic horror setting.
Player decisions extend beyond combat. Encounters can influence how the story develops, while companions and other non-player characters have individual storylines that can change permanently depending on the player’s actions.
The game also introduces a world in which language itself can reshape reality, tying its narrative concepts directly to the supernatural forces surrounding the prison.
Five Interconnected Areas Offer Multiple Routes
Exploration takes place across five interconnected areas, with multiple routes allowing players to navigate the prison in different ways. Resource management will play an important role, requiring players to carefully consider how they use limited supplies.
Crafting and dangerous items are also part of the survival system. The combination of scarce resources, branching paths and consequential encounters is intended to make exploration as important as combat.
Gritty Piggy is also emphasizing replayability. Sin or Suffer will feature multiple premature endings, several main endings and a secret ending, giving players reasons to return and experiment with different decisions and approaches.
Choices Can Permanently Change Characters and Outcomes
The branching structure means encounters are designed to have consequences beyond their immediate outcome. Choices involving companions and NPCs can permanently alter their stories, potentially changing what players discover during later portions of the game.
Understanding the prison and its mysteries may carry risks of its own. According to the developers’ description of the project, uncovering information about the world can sometimes prove as dangerous as attempting to survive its physical threats.
Gritty Piggy Takes on Its Largest Project Yet
Sin or Suffer represents the biggest game project so far from Gritty Piggy. The France-based independent studio consists of friends Téo and Paul, who met while attending IT school in 2014.
Before moving into game development on a larger scale, the pair worked on several websites and wrote two fantasy novels. In 2024, they decided to develop a larger project centered on their shared interest in horror media and interactive storytelling.
The game is being published by Germany-based Assemble Entertainment, an independent publisher that has released more than 50 games since 2016. Its catalog includes Sticky Business, Roadwarden, Decktamer, Paddle Paddle Paddle, Grind Survivors and the Endzone franchise.
Sin or Suffer Targets a 2027 Steam Release
With its combination of medieval dark fantasy, survival mechanics, branching narratives and turn-based combat, Sin or Suffer is positioning itself as a grim addition to the growing field of narrative-focused indie horror games.
The title is scheduled to launch on Steam for PC in 2027, with its interconnected prison, multiple endings and consequence-driven progression forming the core of Gritty Piggy’s largest project to date.
