FZ: Formation Z Launches Worldwide, Reviving a Classic Mech Shooter for Modern Consoles and PC

Date:

Retro Arcade Shooter Returns With Updated Graphics, New Soundtrack, and Expanded Customization

A classic Japanese arcade shooter from the 1980s is making a comeback for modern gaming audiences as FZ: Formation Z officially launches worldwide on PC and current-generation consoles.

Sweden-based publisher Clear River Games announced Thursday that the updated mech shooter is now available digitally on Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch.

Developed in partnership with City Connection, the release reintroduces players to the fast-paced arcade action that helped the original game develop a cult following among retro gaming fans.

Physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 are scheduled to ship June 9.

Classic Arcade Gameplay Gets a Modern Upgrade

Originally released during the height of the arcade boom, FZ: Formation Z became known for its transformation-based gameplay and side-scrolling shooter mechanics.

Players control Ixpel, a transforming mech capable of switching instantly between robot and fighter jet forms during combat. The gameplay requires players to alternate between land and air movement while battling waves of enemies across increasingly difficult stages.

The updated version preserves the core gameplay mechanics of the original while adding modern visual enhancements, improved effects, and new customization systems aimed at contemporary console and PC audiences.

The game also features a completely updated soundtrack composed by Daisuke Matsumoto, adding a modern audio experience while maintaining the retro-inspired atmosphere longtime fans associate with classic Japanese shooters.

New Features Expand the Original Experience

Real-Time Mech Transformation Mechanics

One of the defining features of FZ: Formation Z remains its instant transformation system.

Players can seamlessly switch Ixpel between robot mode for ground combat and jet fighter mode for aerial movement, allowing different strategies depending on the environment and enemy patterns.

The game includes five missions filled with heavy enemy fire, large-scale boss encounters, and fast-paced action designed to mirror the challenge level of classic arcade shooters popular during the 1980s and 1990s.

Extensive Customization Options

The modern release introduces expanded customization tools that were not available in the original arcade version.

Players earn “FZ Points” during missions, which can be used to unlock mech parts, cosmetic items, and combat modules. Upgrades can be equipped across four separate module slots, allowing players to tailor their mech toward balanced performance or specialized offensive builds.

Customization options also include interchangeable parts, alternate color schemes, and personalized decals.

The system reflects the growing popularity of build customization in modern action games, a feature especially familiar to U.S. players accustomed to progression systems in contemporary shooters and mech-based titles.

Score Attack and Archives Cater to Competitive Players

Score Attack Mode Adds Replayability

After completing missions, players unlock a Score Attack mode that tracks high scores for individual stages.

The feature encourages repeat playthroughs and leaderboard competition, elements that have remained central to arcade-inspired gaming experiences for decades.

Players can use fully customized versions of Ixpel while attempting to improve rankings and personal records.

In-Game Archives and Galleries

The game also includes a collection of archival features designed for completion-focused players.

A “War Record” system tracks statistics including defeated enemies and completed missions, while an “Enemy Data” encyclopedia catalogs adversaries encountered throughout the campaign.

Players can additionally unlock artwork and bonus gallery content by completing specific gameplay challenges.

Digital and Physical Editions Now Available

FZ: Formation Z is now available digitally for:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch 2
  • PC via Steam and Epic Games Store

The digital edition is priced at $29.99 in the United States.

Physical editions launch June 9 with the following suggested retail prices:

  • PlayStation 5: $39.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2: $49.99

Retro Gaming Market Continues Growing

The release of FZ: Formation Z comes amid continued demand for retro-inspired games and remastered arcade titles in the U.S. gaming market.

Classic shooters, pixel-art games, and modernized arcade franchises have seen renewed popularity in recent years as publishers target longtime players who grew up during the arcade era, alongside younger audiences discovering retro gameplay styles for the first time.

Publishers like Clear River Games have increasingly focused on restoring and reintroducing older Japanese game franchises for global audiences, particularly as retro gaming communities continue expanding across North America and Europe.

Companies Behind the Revival

Founded in 2005, City Connection owns the intellectual property rights to several classic titles originally developed by Jaleco, a longtime Japanese game company known for arcade and console releases during the 1980s and 1990s.

Clear River Games, based in Karlstad, Sweden, specializes in publishing retro-inspired and classic games for modern hardware platforms.

The company operates under Freemode, part of the broader Embracer Group portfolio, which oversees multiple gaming and entertainment businesses globally.

With updated visuals, expanded features, and preserved arcade-style gameplay, FZ: Formation Z aims to introduce a new generation of players to one of Japan’s classic mech shooters while appealing to longtime fans of retro gaming culture.
