Square Enix Reveals Major Expansion Details During FINAL FANTASY XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin
Square Enix has unveiled a wave of new content for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, offering players their first in-depth look at Evercold, the game’s sixth expansion scheduled to launch in January 2027. Announced during the keynote presentation at the FINAL FANTASY XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, the update introduces a new playable job, expanded gameplay systems, crossover content with the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake trilogy, and a confirmed release date for the game’s Nintendo Switch 2 version.
The announcements mark the beginning of the Godless Realms story arc, which continues the long-running MMORPG’s narrative with new regions, gameplay mechanics, and character customization features.
Bastion Becomes the First New Job in Evercold
Shield-Wielding Tank Introduced by Producer Naoki Yoshida
FINAL FANTASY XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida revealed the first new job arriving with Evercold: the Bastion, a defensive tank class that fights using two massive shields known as skyltborgs.
A gameplay trailer showcased the Bastion’s combat abilities, highlighting its unique dual-shield fighting style and defensive capabilities, making it one of the expansion’s most anticipated additions.
Main Story Gains Greater Player Freedom
Flexible Progression and Auto Content Balancing Introduced
Square Enix also detailed several gameplay changes designed to provide players with greater flexibility throughout the expansion.
The main scenario will feature a revised narrative structure that allows players to choose which story regions to explore first rather than following a strictly linear path.
Supporting that change is a new Auto Content Balancing system, which automatically adjusts enemy levels and dungeon difficulty to match a player’s progression. This enables players to complete dungeons and major story content in different orders without sacrificing balance.
Expanded Character Customization Coming
New Animation Skins and Visual Editing Tools
Evercold will introduce Character Action Skins, allowing players to customize the animations used for common actions such as Teleport and Warp. Additional animation options, including profession-specific actions, are planned for future updates.
Character creation and appearance customization are also receiving significant upgrades, including:
- A new color picker with expanded color options
- More detailed eye and lip customization
- New cosmetic features such as eyeshadow
- Additional visual customization tools for creating more personalized characters
FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Crossover Raid Announced
“Beyond the Lifestream” Brings Two Iconic Worlds Together
One of the keynote’s biggest announcements was “Beyond the Lifestream,” an all-new eight-player raid series inspired by the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake trilogy.
Yoshida was joined by FINAL FANTASY VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi, who confirmed that developers from both projects are collaborating closely on the crossover.
The raid series will become part of the Evercold expansion and aims to blend characters, themes, and gameplay elements from both acclaimed RPG franchises.
EVANGELION Collaboration Expands
Mahiro Maeda Joins Development Team
Square Enix also revealed additional details about EVANGELION: Ghosts of Desire, the alliance raid series first announced earlier this year.
Acclaimed director and animator Mahiro Maeda, known for his work on Mad Max: Fury Road and EVANGELION:3.0 +1.0 THRICE UPON A TIME, has joined the project as a guest artist and designer.
A new teaser trailer was also released during the presentation.
Nintendo Switch 2 Version Arrives in August
Launch Scheduled for August 4, 2026
Square Enix confirmed that FINAL FANTASY XIV Online will launch for Nintendo Switch 2 on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
Pre-orders are now available through the Nintendo eShop. To help ensure server stability during launch, Switch 2 players will receive an approximately one-month free subscription period.
Players will be able to access the game through the Free Trial, Starter Edition, or Complete Edition, expanding access to one of the world’s largest MMORPG communities.
Additional Features Revealed for Upcoming Updates
The keynote also highlighted several other additions planned for Evercold and future patches, including:
- New explorable regions within the Icebound Realm of the Fourth, including Naglfar, Hringhorni, and the town of Fargarth

Patch 7.55 Arrives Before Evercold
Ahead of the expansion’s release, Patch 7.55 is scheduled to launch on July 28, 2026. The update introduces new content including Occult Crescent, Phantom Weapons, Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures, and additional Allied Society quests.
