A new medieval fantasy role-playing game that emphasizes player freedom and a living, reactive world is preparing to make its debut on PC this spring. Valorborn, an upcoming sandbox RPG from Turkish indie developer Laps Games, will launch in Early Access on Steam on April 15, 2026, the studio announced during IGN Fan Fest.
The game promises an open-ended medieval fantasy experience where player choices—and inaction—shape the world in meaningful ways.
A Living Sandbox World That Moves Without You
Dynamic Simulation Drives Gameplay
Unlike many traditional RPGs, Valorborn is built around a systemic simulation designed to function independently of the player’s presence. Villagers maintain daily routines, factions compete for territory and influence, and threats roam the countryside regardless of whether players intervene.
Every structure in the game—from houses to caves and ruins—is fully explorable. There are no decorative doors or inaccessible buildings, reinforcing the game’s emphasis on immersion and realism.
This design reflects a growing trend in open-world RPGs popular among U.S. players, where emergent storytelling and unscripted events create unique experiences for each player.
Freedom to Choose Your Path
Players are not locked into a single storyline or profession. Instead, they can carve their own path based on personal preference and survival strategy.
Possible roles include:
- Thief: Sneak into buildings, pick locks, and sell stolen goods.
- Hunter: Track wildlife, gather resources, and trade animal pelts.
- Sellsword: Accept contracts to eliminate bandits, monsters, and other threats.
Players can travel alone or assemble a party, with each decision influencing relationships, opportunities, and long-term outcomes.
A Fallen Empire and a World That Fears Magic
The Collapse of Allarion
Valorborn’s story begins after the destruction of the Empire of Allarion, a once-dominant power that unified rival factions and races. Magic fueled the empire’s prosperity, powering everything from basic labor to advanced systems.
But that reliance came at a cost.
Over time, magic corrupted both the body and mind, triggering a catastrophic collapse that shattered the empire and reshaped the political landscape.
Thareon: A Kingdom Built on Fear of Magic
Early Access players will begin in Thareon, one of several kingdoms that emerged after Allarion’s fall. In Thareon, magic is strictly forbidden. Authorities actively hunt magic users and destroy magical artifacts.
The result is a harsh, authoritarian environment where survival often depends on avoiding suspicion as much as defeating enemies.
This darker tone aligns with fantasy worlds familiar to American audiences, such as Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings, where political tension and personal survival often outweigh clear-cut heroism.
Permadeath Raises the Stakes
One of Valorborn’s defining features is its permadeath system. When characters die, they are gone permanently.
While permadeath can be punishing, the developers say it is designed to enhance the overall experience rather than frustrate players. Loss and failure become part of each player’s story, encouraging adaptation and experimentation.
This approach echoes mechanics found in cult-favorite RPGs like Kenshi and Wartales, where consequences are permanent and survival is never guaranteed.
Full Release Will Expand Player Choice
The Early Access version represents only the beginning of Valorborn’s development.
According to Laps Games, the full release will introduce:
- Additional kingdoms and regions
- More character creation options, including races and backgrounds
- New starting scenarios and story possibilities
Players will even be able to begin as a completely blank character, allowing for fully customized role-playing.
Inspired by Classic RPGs and Player Freedom
Laps Games founder Onurhan Akçay said the studio drew inspiration from several well-known RPGs, including Mount & Blade, which is widely praised for its open-ended medieval gameplay.
Akçay said the studio’s previous game, Land of the Vikings, helped lay the foundation for its latest project.
“Valorborn is an ambitious project for us,” Akçay said. “We wanted to create a world where players can truly choose their own path and write their own stories—a dangerous, reactive medieval fantasy world full of freedom, tension, and possibility.”
Early Access Launch Marks Beginning of Development Journey
Valorborn’s April 15 Early Access release will allow players to experience the game while it continues to evolve. Laps Games plans to expand the world, refine systems, and add content based on player feedback.
Early Access releases have become increasingly common in the U.S. gaming industry, allowing developers to build communities and refine games before full launch.
Conclusion
With its focus on player choice, systemic world simulation, and high-stakes permadeath, Valorborn is positioning itself as an ambitious entry in the medieval fantasy RPG genre. As it enters Early Access this spring, its success may ultimately depend on how well its living world delivers on its promise of player-driven storytelling.
