Rhino Rock Studios Releases Dual-Mode Shooter for Flatscreen and Virtual Reality Players
London-based indie developer Rhino Rock Studios has officially launched OUTBLAST, a fast-paced sci-fi shooter available as both a traditional PC game and a fully immersive VR experience.
Released June 4, 2026, the game combines retro arcade-inspired gameplay with modern visuals, online leaderboards, and virtual reality support, reflecting continued demand for high-intensity action titles among PC and VR gamers.
The studio says the game was designed to offer two distinct ways to play: classic flatscreen gameplay for traditional arcade shooter fans and virtual reality compatibility for players seeking a more immersive experience.
Retro Arcade Gameplay Meets Modern VR Technology
Originally developed as a retro-inspired prototype, OUTBLAST evolved into a full-scale arcade shooter built around fast reflexes, survival mechanics, and score-based competition.
Players take control of interceptor C11-28, a combat ship tasked with stopping a rogue artificial intelligence known as Typhon that has overtaken the futuristic planet Perseon-6.
The game challenges players to survive waves of infected enemies while navigating chaotic battle zones across five separate districts, each with increasing difficulty and its own boss encounter.
Five Bosses Drive the Story Progression
As players advance through the campaign, the game’s environments visually deteriorate to reflect the spread of the Typhon virus throughout the planet’s infrastructure.
The five major bosses include:
- Hydra
- Gorgon
- Minotaur
- Siren
- Typhon
Each boss introduces different attack patterns and combat mechanics intended to steadily increase the game’s difficulty curve.
Flatscreen and VR Modes Offer Different Experiences
One of the game’s defining features is its dual presentation system.
Players can experience OUTBLAST as a standard PC arcade shooter or use a compatible VR headset for a more immersive perspective. According to Rhino Rock Studios, both modes were designed to provide unique gameplay experiences while maintaining the same core mechanics.
The VR version supports SteamVR-compatible devices including:
- Meta Quest
- Valve Index
- HTC Vive
The studio recommends using a controller for both gameplay modes, with VR players requiring analog stick support.
Upgrades, Leaderboards, and Replayability
Throughout the game, players collect data fragments that can be used to upgrade weapons, shields, extra lives, and combat boosts.
The title also includes achievement tracking and multiple online leaderboards, encouraging replayability and score competition — a feature commonly associated with classic arcade shooters.
The combination of escalating difficulty and leaderboard rankings is intended to appeal to players who enjoy mastering high-skill action games and improving performance through repeated runs.
Environmental Storytelling Shapes the Experience
In addition to combat mechanics, the developers emphasized environmental storytelling as a key part of the experience.
As the Typhon virus spreads from district to district, visual changes throughout Perseon-6 reflect the increasing urgency of the player’s mission. The game gradually shifts from isolated outbreaks to large-scale planetary collapse, reinforcing the high-stakes sci-fi setting.
The presentation draws inspiration from both retro arcade aesthetics and modern science fiction visuals, blending neon effects, futuristic environments, and high-speed gameplay.
Rhino Rock Studios Expands Its VR Portfolio
Rhino Rock Studios was founded in 2024 and specializes in VR, mixed reality, and cross-platform game development.
The studio has contributed to several high-profile VR projects, including Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadows, Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, and multiple Doctor Who VR titles.
In addition to game development, the company also works on co-development partnerships and emerging technology projects across PC, console, mobile, and mixed reality platforms.
Arcade Shooters Continue Finding New Audiences
The release of OUTBLAST highlights the ongoing resurgence of arcade-style shooters in the indie gaming market.
While major publishers increasingly focus on large open-world and live-service titles, smaller studios continue finding success with fast-paced, replayable action games rooted in classic arcade design principles.
By combining retro gameplay mechanics with VR support and modern presentation, OUTBLAST aims to appeal to both longtime arcade fans and newer players exploring immersive shooter experiences on current-generation hardware.
