Survival Townbuilder ‘Romestead’ Surpasses 100,000 Players During Steam Next Fest, Demo Extended

Date:

The indie survival city-building game Romestead has quickly become one of the standout titles from the latest Steam Next Fest. Following a surge of player interest and strong early engagement, the developers have extended the game’s public demo, giving new players additional time to experience the project ahead of its early access release.

Romestead Emerges as a Breakout Hit at Steam Next Fest

During the Future Games Show Live from GDC, indie publisher Three Friends announced that the playable demo for Romestead will remain available on Steam until March 19. The extension follows the game’s strong performance during Steam’s popular demo festival, where it climbed into the Top 10 most-played demos.

The game attracted more than 100,000 active players during the event and accumulated over 230,000 wishlists on Steam. Steam Next Fest, held several times each year, allows developers to showcase upcoming games with limited-time demos, often serving as a testing ground for audience interest before a full launch.

For Romestead, the early numbers suggest strong momentum as the game moves toward its Steam Early Access release.

Rebuilding Ancient Rome in a Cooperative Survival World

Developed by Swedish studio Beartwigs, Romestead blends survival gameplay with cooperative town building. Up to eight players can join forces to rebuild civilization in the aftermath of the mysterious collapse of Ancient Rome.

Players must explore dangerous landscapes, locate surviving citizens, and assign them roles to rebuild infrastructure and restore order. As the settlement grows, players must also appease a pantheon of Roman gods by offering tributes and completing tasks to earn divine blessings that aid their progress.

The challenge goes beyond basic city construction. The game’s world is filled with threats ranging from hostile creatures to undead enemies and powerful legendary bosses that must be defeated to advance.

The combination of mythology, exploration, and cooperative gameplay places Romestead within the expanding survival-crafting genre, which remains highly popular among PC players.

A Different Approach to Survival Gameplay

While many survival games emphasize complex inventory systems and constant resource management, Romestead aims to streamline the experience.

According to the developers, the game focuses on the most engaging elements of survival gameplay while reducing mechanics that often slow players down. Several design choices reflect that philosophy:

Simplified Inventory Management

Traditional survival games frequently require players to manage limited storage and multiple item types. Romestead reduces that burden, allowing players to focus more on building and exploration.

Interactive Resource Gathering

Resource collection is designed to be more engaging, encouraging players to actively participate in gathering materials rather than relying solely on repetitive actions.

No Tool Durability

Unlike many survival titles where tools break after repeated use, Romestead eliminates tool durability entirely. This removes the need for constant repairs or replacements, allowing players to stay focused on expanding their settlement.

These changes are intended to make cooperative play smoother and more accessible, particularly for groups of friends who want to focus on building and exploration rather than micromanagement.

Demo Available on Steam Until March 19

Players interested in trying the game can download the public demo on Steam, which will remain available through March 19 following the extension announced at GDC.

The development team is continuing to share updates with the community as the game approaches its Early Access debut. Players can also follow the studio through community channels such as Discord and social media for news about upcoming features and development progress.

Looking Ahead to Early Access

With strong early engagement and a growing wishlist count, Romestead is shaping up to be one of the more closely watched indie survival games currently in development. The extended demo gives players additional time to explore its cooperative rebuilding of Ancient Rome while the developers prepare for the next phase of release.

If its early reception is any indication, the game could become a notable addition to the survival-builder genre when it enters Early Access later this year.
